I work on a small military base and my credit union has an ATM in a building across the street. It's very convenient for getting cash.

A couple of days ago, I walked over to make a withdrawal and found the machine being serviced (the guy was adding more 20's and 5's). He had a canvas bag full of neatly bundled bills and was quietly filling these metal-type drawers that were "plugged" back into the ATM. I didn't hang around but for just a second, but as I walked back to my office, I realized a few things (all of which make good sense):

1. He had a Glock on his hip. (Whoa! Open carry on a federal installation, but I'm sure his job justifies, nay even requires, it.)

2. He had on regular civilian clothes (a button shirt and jeans -- no uniform, shoulder patch, etc.)

3. He drove a full-size, plain white cargo van (again, no markings of any kind)

Does anyone have a clue about who might employ this guy? The Credit Union? Wells Fargo? Brinks?

Probably the credit union.

When the drive-through ATMs at branches of my bank get filled, the armored car service rolls up in a standard armored truck, complete with bullet-proof glass and gun ports in the sides. There are two armed guards, in uniform. One handles the machine while the second stands watch. I've never tried to look closely, but there may be a third in the back of the truck with the rest of the cash.

At the company I used to work for in Kalif (moment to regurgatate, there...that's better) we had an ATM in the facility, about 6000 people on site. The guys who filled it came in with sidearms. One day I saw them come in without their guns and asked them "Why no guns?" - and was told they had complaints from employees about guns and that the facility management told them the policy was no guns on company property (this was company policy). They carried bags of cash with them, and still wore their bullet proof vests and empty holsters. I assume they left their guns in their truck.
