This guy showed some considerable restraint. Predictions on what will happen to him? I say nothing because of his state of residence. :)

In another story the police officer is quoted as saying, "If the robbery happened the way the robbery victim explained it to us, then he did the right thing," Brimmer said.

Grand Prairie man fatally shoots men who were trying to rob him

12:22 PM CST on Tuesday, January 13, 2004

From Staff Reports

Police were questioning a Grand Prairie man on Tuesday who said he fatally shot two men who were trying to rob him.

The man reported to police that the suspects took him against his will from his home to a local bank. There, he said, he was forced to withdraw cash from an ATM.

According to Grand Prairie Police Detective John Brimmer, the man said the suspects then drove him back to his residence where one of them threatened him with a baseball bat. The man said he feared for his life and fatally shot them with a pistol he had been carrying in his pocket.

He called 911 around 8:30 a.m. and stayed on the phone with the dispatcher until police arrived.

Police said the man, who was in his 60s and was not injured, had a concealed-weapons permit.

Brimmer said the two suspects had not been identified, but both looked to be in their 30s, and one was wearing a ski mask.

Their bodies were being taken to the Dallas County Medical Examiner's office for autopsy.

Of course, there are those who believe that the old man's a bloodthirsty bastard who should be locked away in a deep, dark prison cell for all eternity for having the temerity to believe that he has the right to protect his life, much less with a gun.

Those people are called British politicians. :)

Another reason I like Texas. The cops are probably questioning him to find out why he didn't kill the two sooner. :D

Kidnapping, armed robbery are pretty valid reasons to use deadly force. I hope this old guy walks.

It happened in northern Kentucky too...

Man out for his morning walk around a lake and the bad guy pops out of the brush and says something like, "Give me your money or I'll kill you". The walker pulls out his Beretta Jetfire and gives the bad guy a hole in the forehead. He was indeed "DRT". The Police Chief says, "Well, that's the way CCDW's are supposed to work". I had the warm fuzzies all day long.

the man should be given a medal. Is anyone else bothered by the fact that the headline is "two dead in Grand Prarie shooting" just like it would probably say if it had been a shootout between criminals? Also, if you watch the video on the link, the idiot reporter calls the thieves "victims"

I think we should start a little fund for people all across the US who us a firearm to defend themselves. We could send him a card and a gift card to a local gun shop to upgrade his pistol.

It does bother me that this guy is behind bars this doesn't sound like something they neec to actually throw him in the slammer for. As far as they know he is telling the truth.

i just read the packing.org thread
i hope he isnt arraigned, but it might just be some formality before the DA wakes up.........if not, i hope the man has a pitbull lawyer who gets him off:p

I just saw the story on the news. The guy has been booked for cap. murder, but no charges at this point. Here is the rub. The two robbers were both mysteriously shot in the back of the head.

Texas law, as well as elsewhere, does not specify where you have to shoot a person or can't shoot a person during self defense. Either you have the right to use lethal force, or you don't. The question will no doubt come up as to how the guy managed to shoot both the bad guys in the backs of their heads if he was actually in fear for his life. Two guys, but only one baseball bat. It is going to be interesting to see how the story pans out...assuming what was reported on the news is correct that the bad guys were shot in the backs of their heads.

Hmmm. Maybe he waited until they were leaving and (therefore) weren't watching him. Mebbe they turned as he fired.

Gonna be interesting.

It does have an odor to it.

Hmmm .. as ever ..... all is maybe not quite as it seems. Back of head does have a certain odor to it!

On the superficial evidence supplied, it sounds well OK .... but seems like more details are definitely needed, in order to make a balanced assessment.

I had the warm fuzzies all day long.
KR .. in that case ... I also would have had VERY warm fuzzies .. for several days. Classic!!:)

If it were legal to shoot your kidnapper/robber at anytime, even when they were leaving -- do you think this might reduce this type of crime?

Just wondering?

I mean, we must follow the law -- granted.

But do we have to agree with laws that make the world safer for viscious criminals and much more dangerous for the rest of us?

What's that about "mala in se vs mala prohibitum (sp?)?

Hmm. Hopefully it will all come out in the wash. At least the shooter has a right to trial and a lawyer. It might be that when the guy pulled the pistol, the two creeps turned to run for their sorry lives. Here in New Mexico, a citizen has the right to shoot a fleeing felon. There was an incident several years ago where a citizen with a revolver wound up in the middle of a bank robbery. The guy hid behind a large collumn in the lobby and as the BG walked out, shot him in the back of the head at contact range. The police lauded the citizen for his tactics, saying that by doing it that way, he precluded any posibilty of a gun battle that might have endangered bystanders.

wonder what caliber he used and where was the shot placement. what was the bullet velocity, were they hard ball or hollow points what was the penetration and the expansion. these stories never get the important details

Two guys, but only one baseball bat.
Well maybe they were taking turns stacking their hands on the bat, to see who would be "first up," and that's when the guy realized he had to act! :neener: geegee
