My T-day was interesting and very surprising.
I may have mentioned it when it happened, but I can't find the thread - however, my parents just decided at Rosh-HaShana that they wanted to tell my aunt that I carry a gun. What in the world they were thinking - we can only speculate. They knew that I had been very specific not to mention it to anybody though. Of all the people to spill the beans to though, they chose the biggest loudmouth in my family.... my aunt. We're talking major loudmouth. When she knows ANYTHING, the entire city of Miami knows too within 24 hours. I pretty much knew when my folks told me what they did that night that it was going to come up on T-day (the next big family gathering).... and sure enough it did.
Anyways, to set the scene, I was in Beverly Hills, California of all places. The whole family was there. I wasn't going to say anything, but knew that eventually somebody was going to ask me something about it. If you knew my family, you'd understand.
Sure enough, in the kitchen, I'm there along with one of my cousins and her very liberal, very anti-gun semi-famous news-reporter husband..... my other aunt and uncle (who own the house we were all in).... my mother and father.... and another semi-famous cousin who is a Hollywood producer and is also massively liberal.
Everybody is cooking.... and all of a sudden, my cousin's husband says, "So, Cheese, I hear you have a gun."
I'm just standing there a bit surprised at how it came out of nowhere and said, "I haven't a clue what you're talking about." basically to imply that I had no desire to talk about that subject at a big family event. Of course being about as thick as the corn souffle that I was working on, he persisted. "Oh come on. I'm from Texas. Everybody has a gun there."
As I thought about how to address the seemingly unavoidable.... he switched to my uncle. "Dave, I'll bet you have a gun... what do you have?"
My uncle is a Beverly Hills dwelling, successful businessman, and very much Jewish. I was expecting him to scoff and say, "Yeah right."
instead his response was priceless.... "What gun do I have?? Depends on which one you're asking about?"
I was stunned. He then listed it all. In the list was several AR-15's, an Uzi (semi), and plenty more. He explained that he kept whatever was not legal in CA, out of CA in storage. He must own easily 2-3 times what I own.
As he was explaining, another cousin and her husband walk in along with another uncle of mine. Her husband starts chiming in about what guns he owns!.... and my other uncle mentions he has 2 snubbies at home.
Finally after I realized that I wasn't so alone in my family when it came to RKBA, I was able to speak a bit more at ease about the subject. My cousin's husband was outnumbered!
It was such a relief.
While we all agreed later that my policy of trying to stay mum about the subject was wise, at least now I know that I have some very pro RKBA family..... and I'll be taking the uncle that has 2 snubbies to the range in a week or so. He wants me to make sure his guns are in good condition and to help him learn how to shoot those snubbies.
Anyways, it was good news for me because I was sure prior to T-day that I was the only member in the family who was pro RKBA and was certain that I was going to be verbally ambushed on T-day from all angles.
