Howdy, folks.
Just got back from taking my wife to the gun store. I wanted to check the place out and ogle over the guns and the wife was interested in a SD pistol. So I'm standing with my wife while the clerk starts to recomend a series of different guns. He showed her a few models that we're probably going back to get one but it was strange. He was really pushing .22 WMR and .380 for effective SD. I know a lot of people recomend .380 for women but we already explained to the guy that she can handle the recoil of a service sized 9mm and a compact .40S&W. Oh well. Let's continue on. He went to help another customer while we were browsing and he overheard me say that she might want something with a little bit more power. He finished with the customer and said, "More Power?" and pulled out a Mossberg Maverick or something like that...it was a PGO shotgun though. My wife's shot rifles before and she's shot handguns but had no clue on how to hold this thing to shoot. I try to explain to her how it might be shot but I'm also emphasizing that she'd be a lot more effective with a buttstock. He goes on to explain that with 4 shells of buckshot you don't even have to aim, just point in the general direction and you'll score a hit (yeah, likely story). He also said that the key to self defense is to scare the guy away, not shoot him but surprisingly he didn't mention how the sound of the racking of a shotgun would cause a BG to involuntairly loose all control of his bowels. Of course the whole time my wife is nodding, smiling and the sort while he's giving her this class, knowing how to sift through the BS and find those sweet nuggets of truth. But, like I said though, he was very friendly and aside from what's posted above, quite informative...but then his boss showed up when I was asking what kind of 9x18mm ammo they had on hand. And he knows his 9x18 pistols in and out, I'll give him that, but he was saying that Federal took .380 bullets and put them in 9x18mm casings and that's why they're really good if you're using it for SD. He also told me that since all they had was Wolf MC in 9x18mm, I could "Just buy some .380's they'll work just fine." After that we said our goodbyes and went out to the truck. My wife will probably be going back a bit later for a Kel-Tec or a Taurus .357.
Lessons learned:
1. When your wife (or husband or boyfriend or girlfriend or SO) wants to go out and buy a gun, take them, let them dominate the purchase, you only need to sit back and chime in when asked for assistance, after all, it's not your gun, it's theirs.
2. Some guys in Gun Shops don't know everything but neither do you. That's okay. If they're respectful and kind, they're good in my book.
3. Sometimes you have to sift through a pile of doodie to find that nice gem. I learned a few things from the clerk that I didn't know. I also found some really good deals.
4. Trips to the gun store are fun.
