Howdy, folks.

Just got back from taking my wife to the gun store. I wanted to check the place out and ogle over the guns and the wife was interested in a SD pistol. So I'm standing with my wife while the clerk starts to recomend a series of different guns. He showed her a few models that we're probably going back to get one but it was strange. He was really pushing .22 WMR and .380 for effective SD. I know a lot of people recomend .380 for women but we already explained to the guy that she can handle the recoil of a service sized 9mm and a compact .40S&W. Oh well. Let's continue on. He went to help another customer while we were browsing and he overheard me say that she might want something with a little bit more power. He finished with the customer and said, "More Power?" and pulled out a Mossberg Maverick or something like that...it was a PGO shotgun though. My wife's shot rifles before and she's shot handguns but had no clue on how to hold this thing to shoot. I try to explain to her how it might be shot but I'm also emphasizing that she'd be a lot more effective with a buttstock. He goes on to explain that with 4 shells of buckshot you don't even have to aim, just point in the general direction and you'll score a hit (yeah, likely story). He also said that the key to self defense is to scare the guy away, not shoot him but surprisingly he didn't mention how the sound of the racking of a shotgun would cause a BG to involuntairly loose all control of his bowels. Of course the whole time my wife is nodding, smiling and the sort while he's giving her this class, knowing how to sift through the BS and find those sweet nuggets of truth. But, like I said though, he was very friendly and aside from what's posted above, quite informative...but then his boss showed up when I was asking what kind of 9x18mm ammo they had on hand. And he knows his 9x18 pistols in and out, I'll give him that, but he was saying that Federal took .380 bullets and put them in 9x18mm casings and that's why they're really good if you're using it for SD. He also told me that since all they had was Wolf MC in 9x18mm, I could "Just buy some .380's they'll work just fine." After that we said our goodbyes and went out to the truck. My wife will probably be going back a bit later for a Kel-Tec or a Taurus .357.

Lessons learned:
1. When your wife (or husband or boyfriend or girlfriend or SO) wants to go out and buy a gun, take them, let them dominate the purchase, you only need to sit back and chime in when asked for assistance, after all, it's not your gun, it's theirs.
2. Some guys in Gun Shops don't know everything but neither do you. That's okay. If they're respectful and kind, they're good in my book.
3. Sometimes you have to sift through a pile of doodie to find that nice gem. I learned a few things from the clerk that I didn't know. I also found some really good deals.
4. Trips to the gun store are fun.

good story almost happy ending
It's just standard practice in our house that if we're spending over 200 on something (aside from groceries) we look at it, go home, talk about it, sleep it over and then come back. This keeps us from getting bamboozled and plenty of time to make a healthy decision.

I have had my wife bust out laughing at the sales clerk when they started to BS her. She told one "youre cute, but you have no idea what you are talking about". While laughing at him, then I start to snicker. Boy do they get mad!

AAR, when/where are you arriving in "God's Country". After all if God was not a "Tar Heel" fan why would He have made the sky "Carolina Blue";) wc
PS, "shoot and grin" weekend 17 Oct near Rockingham-hope you can come.

Yeah, funny as it is when I and my 5'2 97# wife went shopping for guns,on several occasions,i've noticed that 'a few' of the sales clerks would mention 'light calibers' to very small guns...

Wrong thing to do,as my little red head, who as an avid shooter can handle .45's nicely, even a Mossberg 12 without a problem but as per size it 'is an optical illusion,or (some) male perceptions' that a woman cant seem to handle a larger caliber etc.It can be amusing watching her 'out shoot' life sized guys'(her words)with her P94 .40...

When one sales guy at a local gun store and club mentioned she should get a small .32 caliber since she was 'so tiny',so she takes out her P94 and asked 'can the .32's fit in this'? As she just laughed, took up her gun and walked away...with the clerks jaw hanging open...

My wife is 4' 5" or so and LOVES to shoot .44 magnums. My .45 and 9mm Magnum is "OK" but she likes the big bad boy! Darned good with it too!

NEVER underestimate the ladies!

Sounds like a store to stay away from. My fiance and I went to one store, and this guy was talking up the XD 9 sub compact...she said that's too small, lets try something bigger
...more talk...talking up the XDM...
Ok...lets see this XDM...terrible grip, trigger, sights, everything...pass
well, could you show us the XD45 compact right there...
but it's a .45! It's got a lot of kick...
she can handle a .45 just fine...
Her to me: that feels good, but not quite right.

Back in the car we were talking about how sexist and stupid he was...

Go to a shop in her parent's town, walk in and it looks like a good ol boys shop, PC guns only here...kinda place...

Go to the counter...
How's it going sir? we are shopping for a pistol for her...
Ok, home defense? Car? purse? etc?
Her: Concealed carry
Ok...have you shot a gun before
Yes
What have you shot and liked
K frame revolvers, the 1911, but I would want it lighter, .500 S&W , but I like revolvers more as a general rule
Ok..well, why don't we start off with the smallest gun we have here and work up and find what you like?
Ok.
Ruger LCP, PPK
too light and small, too small and poor trigger
Here's a couple small .38
too small and light...I shoot better with a bigger heavier gun
Of course
Try this SP101
Feels great.
Ok, lets step up one more to a Taurus .44
Feels good too...dang...I can't decide...
You could get both of them on the budget you have...
True...I think I like the SP101 a little more.

Very nice shop with good prices and excellent service.

An excellent policy there.

I'm sure that there have been a lot of fights you've never had on account of it.

My dad and I are both cautious, do-your-research types. My stepmother says we miss opportunities that way. We reply that we don't make big mistakes.

My DH, after getting burned a couple times when just out of high school, is a dedicated adherent of the "Ben Franklin system". :)
