SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Jan. 24 /U.S. Newswire/ --The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):

The world-wide gun control movement suffered a major setback yesterday with the general election defeat of Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin by his Conservative opponent, Stephen Harper. Observers believe that Harper will abandon many of Martin's leftist social policies -- including Canada's scandal- ridden gun registration system.

On the campaign trail, Martin had pledged to institute a total ban on civilian ownership of handguns. Martin also announced that he would file international lawsuits against American firearm manufacturers who he blamed for the rising tide of violence among drug gangs in Canada's urban areas.

Martin's defeat is the second serious blow to the international gun control movement in recent months. In October 2005, Brazilian voters went to the polls and voted down a nationwide gun ban by a 2 to 1 margin.

The rejection of Martin and his gun control schemes by Canadian voters comes just as the Illinois General Assembly is considering a measure that would ban rifles and shotguns favored by collectors and competitive rifle shooters. The ISRA considers the bill, HB2414, to be another incremental step toward the eventual eradication of privately owned firearms in Illinois.

"The message is clear," said ISRA Executive Director Richard Pearson. "Freedom-loving people the world over are telling gun- grabbers that liberty trumps feel-good politics every time. I'd advise Illinois legislators to keep Mr. Martin's defeat in mind when it comes time to vote on HB2414."

The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful and responsible firearms ownership. For more than a century, the ISRA has represented the interests of over 1.5 million law- abiding Illinois firearm owners.

Since this is The High Road I cannot express my feelings about the ISRA.

However I will say that the ISRA helped get a law passed in Illinois to "close the gunshow loophole" and what did they get the 1.5 million law abiding Illinois firearm owners? Why nothing at all. Isn't that special ?
