SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Feb. 4 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):

The ISRA is calling upon Illinois gun owners to show solidarity with a suburban gun shop that has been under constant attack by national gun control groups and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. This call for action comes only days after the Chicago Police Department (CPD) backed down from its plan to picket Chuck's Gun Shop, located in south suburban Riverdale.

In late January, the CPD solicited Chicago school principals to provide assistance in organizing and executing a Feb. 21 protest rally in front of Chuck's. Ever-vigilant gun owners exposed the plan as a taxpayer funded attack on the Second Amendment. A nationwide firestorm of protest ensued and, on Feb. 2, 2004, the CPD announced that the protest was cancelled.

Despite the CPD's retreat, the ISRA is going forward with plans for a counterdemonstration in support of Chuck's. The ISRA is asking all gun rights supporters to stop by Chuck's on Feb. 21, 2004, and make a purchase in the shop, which is located at 14310 S. Indiana Avenue, Riverdale.

"The owners of Chuck's have shown great courage in the face of years of relentless harassment by Mayor Daley, gun control groups, and the media," said ISRA Executive Director Richard Pearson. "Throughout it all, the folks at Chuck's have not wavered in their commitment to the right to keep and bear arms."

"Freedom loving people everywhere owe a debt of gratitude to Chuck's for standing up to this nonstop onslaught against our constitutional rights," continued Pearson. "The best way for gun rights supporters to say 'thanks' to Chuck's is to stop by the shop on Feb. 21, offer words of encouragement to the staff, and spend a few bucks on ammo, accessories, or whatever. I know I'll be at Chuck's door when it opens that morning, and I hope to see many of our friends and members there as well."
