His name on Something Awful is Micromancer, and he's definitely doing all this stuff as a joke. He's a pretty cool dude in real life, too. He sold me my first gun: a (very clean and nice) Ruger Mark I.

It started out as a half-joking way to give the mod the crappy gun, but when he refused to accept the weapon for hygienic reasons, Micromancer listed it on Gunbroker. After that, the mod declared the thread an "art contest". Here's my entry:
