Hypothetically speaking, if a father wanted to give his son a legal firearm and they lived in different states what's the likelihood of getting caught if he didn't do an official transfer through an FFL dealer?

Who would know, and how much risk is there if at some point the gun was resold to a third party through the proper channels?

All this is hypothetical of course.....:p

Well, if the son happened to be Jared Lee Loughner, it could get ugly.

As for who would know, I've moved my tin foil hat to the basement for now, but really, no one will know if everything goes right. It's when things go wrong that counts. If that firearm were to find it's way into the wrong hands someday, and some sheriff decides follow the trail, it could come back to bite the giver-who-saved-$20-for-lawful-FFL-transfer-fee. Maybe, maybe not.

I can't imagine anyone convincing me it's a good idea.

I live in CO, but am from OK. If I were back there visiting and a friend or relative had a pistol for sale and I wanted to buy it, well, all I'll say it that it sure would seem silly to got to all that extra trouble if I'm driving back home to CO anyway......

No, it's not legal to do so, which is insane in my opinion. If it were a rifle or a shotgun, or a hammer, or a chainsaw, it's legal....but a handgun, it's not? Where's the sense in that? A private sale of a used legal item between two private individuals shouldn't involve insane government regulations, IMO.

It would involve two federal felonies. Guess that's enough of an answer for THR, you savvy?
