Intratec-DC9 Any one have an experience with one or opinions?

I found an Intratec DC9 that im thinking about buying that seems to be in pretty good shape. It has a couple mags with it and a hard case but not a barrel extension. I was wondering what you guys thought about em?

I know they are kinda ugly but thats why I like it. I was thinking about offering the guy $300 for it, does that seem in line, too high, too low?

Well, all the one's I've ever shot were jamomatics, so $300 is a little high for a paper weight.

This applies for both full and semi auto versions. I've never even heard anything good about these guns from someone who didn't end every word in "izzle."
 
All the searching I have done on them seems to show that there are some good ones out there along with plenty of lemons. I have seen them selling for more than $300 so i figured this might be something I should snap up.

Im no ninja but it does have the scary ninja look to it..
 
I ended up with a Intratec DC9 in a trade. Came with a 32+ shot mag, and a aftermarket looking 25 or so shot mag.

Works jam free with 115gr ball ammo.

Despite being a bit awkward, the crude gun is accurate enough.

Digging around in a gunstore spare mag pile, I found another 32+ shot factory mag. With a couple of mags a fellow can sling a lot of lead with one of these.

I've never heard anything particularly good about Tec 9's reliability or accuracy, however mine works perfectly. Seems as if the short barreled versions without the shrouded barrel have a reputation for not stabilizing the bullets(keyholing). However I have no proof of that. Mine has five or six inches of barrel and pokes round holes in the targets.

I remember these selling for $99 brandnew in the early 1990's, but the ones you see now seem to have actually gained some value and collector status. Who would have thought that!?

My father in law had a .22 version that was a true Jam-O-Matic!
 
As long as you're not getting it for self-defense, I'd say $300 is a decent price.

I paid just under $400 for mine if I remember right.

I had quite a few problems with mine at first, but a lot of it ended up being that the bolt wasn't closing all the way. I replaced the recoil springs, and it's actually fairly reliable most the time now.

Accuracy is absolute crap. From 10 feet away I can't even hit a pop can with it (and neither could anyone else who I let shoot it). A lot of them came from the factory with misaligned sights, which seems to be the problem with mine.

The finish on them is also terrible. Mine starts rusting even when it's sitting in the case in a house, so I wipe it down at least once a month whether I shoot it or not.

They're uncomfortable and awkward to shoot. You're not supposed to hold onto the mag while shooting it, and they're really heavy for shooting by just holding onto the grip like a regular pistol. I once tried bump firing it by hanging onto the barrel shroud (it's a wonder I didn't accidentally shoot myself in the hand or something), and ended up cutting the hell out of my hand on the sling catch thingie. I failed at getting it to "bump" too, which was even more lame.

They're a pain to dissasemble (for me at least). The rear cap unscrews (which gets marked up everytime you do it) to strip it, and when you put it back together, it usually binds up so the gun won't charge and you have to try again.

There's no good aftermarked mags for them. Western, National, etc. are all garbage. If the extra mags with the one you're looking at buying are factory mags, those are actually pretty expensive on gunbroker, and the only mags that (usually) work reliably.

Only shoot standard pressure 115gr fmj in it. Heavier bullets and high pressure loads supposedly crack the receivers.

These guns get really dirty after just a few rounds for some reason also. Poor design?

Spare parts are expensive. SKSparts and stony creek armory are some of the few places that typically carry parts for them. Stoney creek armory also sells drums for them, but they're like $200, and I don't know if anyone has actually bought one. They also run a message board for tec-9s that has the best info about them that I've found so far.

Despite all the bad things that people say about these guns (most of it well deserved unfortunately), they're still one of the coolest looking and most infamous guns ever made, so hopefully you get it.
 
Go for it if you want the true look of "hoodlum" be sure you wear your pants around your ankles and shoot it sideways too!
 
I've never heard anything good about them. They are popular among gang members (who don't know much about guns, just that they look cool holding a "gat" sideways) because they look intimidating. They have a bad reputation for not being able to feed hollowpoints and there really is no good way to hold it.
 
I paid $250 for a very early Tec-9 (pre-DC-9) one of the first runs back around '90, I believe. I've handled the DC-9 as well - less attention to fit and finish, no threaded barrel, different sling attachment.

The firing pin WILL break if you dry fire without a snap cap.

Mine does not like CCI Blazer ammo, everything else feeds fine. Limp wristing will cause stovepipes; holding the magazine as support will cause more jams.

Fed well and handled properly, mine is more accurate than any other 9mm I own. Sad, with it's ugly sights, but it's true.
 
Run away from that gun! Every Intratec product I have seen has been pure junk.

I have owned a Tec-22 Scorpion, total and compleat junk in every way.

I am ashamed to say I bought a AB-10 (Tec-9) new at a local gun dealer that I no longer speak to. I can't remember what I paid but it was way less than $300. I am thinking $150 new about 8-9 years ago. It could have been $250 but it wasn't over $300 for sure.

Anyway, It jammed all the time with all mags. It was not accurate at all. I could put an unfired bullet in the muzzel and it would rattle around with a gap. The bore was over 9mm in diameter.

I couldn't get rid of either of these guns fast enough. Bear in mind that I owned a Jennings J-22 and I can find good things to say about it. I have nothing good to say about the Tec-22 or Tec-9. I say, buy a Glock 17 and then get a few 33rd Glock mags. It will be easier to shoot and more accurate. It will also be reliable and more compact.

The only reason to own a semi-auto gun like the Tec-9 is for show.
 
Don't believe when someone says it is a waste of money.

Use 115 FMJ ammo, the manual says to use this ammo only.

If you use hollow points and complain about jams your an idiot that need to read a manual. Complain all you want about a modern gun not being able to shoot hollow points, but the fact is that the manufacture intended for the gun to use 115GR. Ball ammo only, so use it.

Its not a MP5 so don't think accuracy is the best....

EDIT: and only use factory 32RD mags as they are the most reliable, forget about the 50 rounders...

SO BASICALLY

shoot the correct ammo
and only use factory mags that are 32 rounders and you are good to go..
 
I don't care what people buy. I was stating exactly what I thought about it and that hasn't changed one bit. I consider Intratec to be one of the worst gun makers ever. Every product I have seen from them was a mess.

When I see someone with a Tec-9, I know they are not real gun people. Tec-9s are one of those learning guns that you buy when looks are everything. Once you have owned one, you are over it.
 
I appreciate everyones input. Sounds like there are good and bad ones out there.

I know they seem to be liked by gang bangers and all but I thought it might be something interesting to pick up and shoot a few times and pass it along to everyone else. I ended up not getting it though. I would like to go a different path and try a Sig 9mm.
 
It's a gamble... crapshoot..

I have an ab10 post ban model that spit the extractor out the bottom the second clip into my shooting fun, never once fired a decent amount of shells before jamming. Then it seemed to work pretty well, oddly enough without the extractor... Until I pulled the trigger and it fired without the bolt being fully closed, exploded brass went everywhere.. I was informed to only shoot FMJ style rounds cus it didn't like anything else, well it jammed a good 30 times before the half closed detonation. I traded it in the next day!! Biggest POS I ever owned.... In all honesty I cannot speak for them all though. A friend has the shrouded barrel orignal tec-9 version and it shoots fairly reliable. I'd rather put the $300 on a mac11!! Looks way better and functions flawlessly!
