Finally got her home!. Takes quite a while over here until the paperwork gets approved, but today, I was eventually able to retrieve her from the armory were she had been stored.

The pistol came from "Iparguns", which is a smal business located in the north of Spain, who is carrying out repairs and spare parts sales for STAR, Astra and Llama pistols. The good news for whoever wants one, they're in stock, ready for shipment and yes, they send them abroad (guns and parts).

The pistol is not brand new. It's a police trade-in with very little use. As in the US, police trade-in are usually a good deal over here because they haven't seen that much use. Notwithstanding this, Mr. José Carrillo, Iparguns' manager and gunsmith, refurbishes them completely, so you purchase the closest to a "new" pistol.

First impression out of the box and racking the slide, the pistol is TIGHT. I shook her and no rattling sound whatsoever (we're talking an "old" pistol here). Field strip and again, it's tight. Load magazines and same thing. So far, looking good. Looks like Don José has done his homework.

Put a snap cap in and pulled the trigger. I had ordered a trigger job since the use of this gun will be mostly range (IPSC) use, and there it is. A double action shorter and with a more constant feel than my 92FS, and SA is just great. Short, clean, and crisp. I had almost forgotten how good the trigger on this pistol was. The barrel's feed ramp has been broadened -slightly- and polished and the mag safety is gone.

And here she is:

We're expecting some bad weather coming in tomorrow (close to midnight here right now), but I have the whole morning off and I'll be heading to the range. I don't care if its pouring and I have to shoot just at the metal pippers, but I'll be there :D. Promise to update the thread with my first range impressions.

Thanks for reading! ;)

Edit: I tried downsizing the picture and uploading it again, but I'm having a weird Tinypic experience. Instead of the photo I'm trying to upload, it's uploading some sort of video game screen shot. I have to leave it like this for the moment. Sorry!.

Great looking pistol! Knowing how smooth their actions are without alteration, I can only imagine how good it is with the trigger work. Good luck with it!

Good looking Star. Nice that they rework them for you.

Are 30M mags readily available in Spain? Hard to find here in the U.S. l like mine. Heavy, recoil like a .22 pistol and very well made. Congrats on a great sleeper of a pistol.

I bought one years ago when they first hit the market, delightful gun, accurate and reliable. Enjoy yours.

Back from the range :D. Raining as expected so I mostly shot at the metal pippers. I also put an IPSC cardboard target when the rain gave me a break, and was able to put a 3" group at 15 meters (45 ft). I still have to get used to this trigger, though. I have always used "combat" triggers in my pistols, set as +2 kg, or more likely 2,5 (that makes between 4,5 and 5,5 lbs) and I estimate (as a wild a** guess) this one to be around 3,5 lbs in SA and +7 in DA. Hopefully, I'll be able to measure this properly soon.

The pistol was flawless and accurate, with very little muzzle flip. Shoots like a champ. I expect a lot of fun from this old lady! :D.

^ If you still want one, Iparguns still has a few units, though not cheap... They also have mags and spares.

I also heard that some S&W mags work on them, though apparently they require some modifications to function properly.

I had one nearly 20 years ago and thought it was built like the proverbial tank. A rather solid and substantial gun with a lot of well thought-out design features, and that was also rather tight in terms of the slide to frame fit. The SA trigger pull was decent enough but the DA was somewhat on the heavy side. Eventually I traded it for another semi-auto due to difficulties in finding spare magazines and parts for it.

Bannockburn,

The DA pull, as stock, is set at 4.5 kgs, SA at 2. That should make like 10 and 4.5 lbs. My service 92FS is heavier on both pulls, and IMHO, the trigger pull is not as clean as in the 30M in each of them.

This was a gun designed for the military, hence its ruggedness. As you say, it has interesting design features, the main one is that you can completely disassemble the pistol with no tools, just using the slide stop pin, and its reliability. The "final" version of this series, the 31PK, did have a decocker, which the 30M doesn't.

Talking "home affairs", the Spanish army went with the Llama M82, a Beretta 92 derivative, instead of the 30M, and is now replacing them by HK USP. IMHO, the 30M was a much better pistol, but apparently, they wanted a decocker, so... Navy and "Infantería de Marina" (Marines) used the 30M, as did the Guardia Civil (law enforcement) and SVA ("Servicio de Vigilancia Aduanera"= Customs). A shorter barreled and alloy framed version, named 28/30PK was used by the CNP or National Police, and has been in service until a couple or years ago, when it was replaced by the HK USPc.

As to the issue of mags, ProMags can be made to work. There is a dimple on the top left side of the mag that needs to be depressed slightly. Taking a punch and tapping it a few times checking for fit will do the trick. I am three for three with ProMags altered in this manner. I have heard others not report the same success possibly with other issues.

As to the 30M itself, for a military/duty pistol it is one of my favorites. Robust, reliable and accurate.

Armoredman;

I know they have sent spares to the US, so I guess it'd be possible to export a pistol should you be interested in one. I'll find out soon, since I have to speak with them soon just to let them know I'm a happy customer.

"Municipal Police" is a very broad term that refers to, as the name indicates, the police agencies that belong to the municipalities. Unless there is a indication on which town that agency belongs to, it's impossible to find out. It's pretty much as it I say "police department" but I don't mention which town's.

Where I live, the municipal police uses HK UPSc. Every town is free to choose what pistol to issue, pretty much as it happens in your case.
