Iowa Lawyer Offers Bonus for Employees to Carry Concealed Gun

Iowa Lawyer gives his employees a $50 a month bonus if they carry a concealed weapon. Perhaps we should ask our boss for a bonus for carrying concealed too.

"Eric Puryear of Puryear Law P.C. provides his employees a $50 bonus each month if they choose to carry a concealed weapon. “I was like so you’re going to give me $50 to carry a pistol? And he was like, yup that’s what we’ll do. Well sign me up,” said paralegal for Elizabeth Payne. Puryear, who's also an NRA instructor, has held a permit class to three employees in the last month. Both he and Payne are the only ones who actually carry a gun to work."
.

It's been my experience that most people like the idea of carrying far more than actually carrying.

As far as I can tell, fewer than half the folks with permits actually carry their guns on anything approaching a regular basis.

A lawyer perhaps with some disgruntled clients?

I carried a weapon for 40 years for my employer and no bonus was ever offered. Had to fight them every step of the way for any pay increase. lol

I would imagine all lawyers, including the best, have disgruntled clients.

The one group I think of as needing to carry are female realtors who go into vacant houses/buildings with strangers on a regular basis.

Another class of women increasingly at risk for assault are veterinarians who travel into the countryside alone to work on large animals.

Fifty bucks a month is hardly enough to furnish your own gun and provide workplace security. What a cheapskate deal.

Glass half empty much?

Wow, way to look a gift horse in the mouth. How many of us are prohibited from carrying at work or even having a firearm in our cars on the employer's premises? From my reading here and elsewhere, I would guess that the vast majority of us fall into that category.

Most of us would be happy to collect an additional $50 a month to do something we would readily do for free.

Get a grip.

I was gonna say.

Regardless of the guys views.

Paying someone to carry a gun is foolhardy.

All he should have done is say, OK, it's fine if you want to CCW at work.
I support that.

Get gun training and come back and let's talk about your pay scale.

Paying people an extra $50 a month who have no interest in doing it?
Or who are not paid for the necessary extra training time & ammo to get safe & proficient with a gun?

BAD idea, and too cheaply promoted to get his law firm in the news for 15 hours of fame!

I saw the video news piece on this story.

He's not looking for free security from the secretary.

The lawyer/employer seems to be a stand up guy. He's also a certified NRA instructor and gives the class to his employees if they want.

His big thing was that he wants people to exercise their 2A rights, if they choose, and doesnt want it to be a burden.

There was 1 employee that, if I understood correctly, CC'd for a while but doesn't now.

I can also see a downside for the employer. He's now paying employees to carry a gun. If they take some action with it, he may be considered to have some liability if things go bad.

He's not paying them to take action.

He's not paying them to CC.

He gives them a bonus if they CC. He isn't contracting with them for any service.

He's a lawyer so he probably has put at least a little thought into it.

Not much different than giving a bonus for wearing deodorant.

I don't see a downside to it.

In Kansas concealed carry permits are very expensive easily reaching $300.00 by the time fees, class, etc. are paid. In six months I would have been rewarded enough to cover the costs.

Of course if the Governor signs the Constitutional Carry that means I paid for less than one year of conceal carry.

But I'll save a bunch of money for my wife.

Huh?

This guy isn't providing the weapons, ammunition, holsters, and training, he's merely providing a bonus if you choose to carry.

And pardon me, but $600 a year specifically because you choose to carry is quite enough to budget a rather nice gun over time, if you choose. Or ammunition. Or holsters.

The average salary for a paralegal in that area is $21,000 a year. That's nearly a 3% pay raise, nothing to turn your nose up on.

Hardly cheapskate.
