(Mod's please move this thread if this is not the correct forum, just seemed the place to put it, I wasn't sure)

As of Jan 1, 2011 Iowa became a SHALL issue state :) .

BUT

Sheriffs being the control freaks that they are.... In some counties they are going store to store encouraging businesses to put up signs prohibiting CCW holders carrying from entering the store.

Someone needs to be policing the sheriff's in my opinion. LUCKILY some of the business owners have told the sheriff's to cram it. Anyone familiar with this kind of thing that can say if the state could/should come down on those guys?

Also another town is taking a vote this week to ban CCW holders from carrying in their town. This goes against the new gun laws here in Iowa, where no town or municipality can counteract the State law.

OK I am done venting :fire: Any legal discussions about this is welcome, and viewpoints would be great :D

The ball is in your court. No longer is it you needing to prove why you NEED CCW, but rather, the opponents are already trying to find a way to prevent legal CCW. So far as I can see, you've won the argument simply by the way it's been framed. See what happens, with time. :)

Have your state org. put a not to shop list of the stores that are posting signs and get a list of the Sheriffs and other politicians that are acting counter to the law.
When elections come again show them there are consequences.

+1
Since most all sheriffs are elected officials, start a campaign of your own to counter their efforts by supporting a pro-gun candidate in your jurisdiction, and maybe even run for the job.

When you find a store with a No CCW sign give them one of the popular No Gun=No $ cards like the one found here- http://www.zazzle.com/no_gun_no_money_business_card-240537187536453384 . Then notify the owner/manager that you are going to list his business as a Foe on the Friend or Foe database at http://friendorfoe.us/Default.aspx . Also let him know that you are going to post this to every internet gun forum you know of to discourage your peers from doing business with him. This has worked in the past to get these signs removed from some businesses.

The IA sheriffs just lost a BIG campaign perk for their supporters.
They are not a happy bunch.

I know one that's not going to be pleased I can now carry in his jurisdiction

AFS

Also keep in mind that those "NO GUNS" signs in Iowa don't carry any weight of law. The only ramification is IF they discover you are carrying and IF they ask you to leave and IF you then DON'T leave, you can be charged with trespassing, or even armed trespassing (not the legal term, but it something to that affect). So if you are concealing then the signs aren't an issue.

I am, however, in favor of leaving cards and not shopping at businesses that post such signs. Most business owners just need to be educated. So be as kind and informative as possible when approaching someone about their sign.

Print this out and give them a copy. If they get the joke, they'll take down their signs.

I live in Scott county, IA. Took my app down with dd214. I was told they will call me in 2 weeks because they are back logged with requests. I heard some Sherriffs are dragging their ass and slowing things down. They can't.

here is a forum GO Here...can go by county too.

:cuss::cuss::banghead::fire::cuss::cuss::banghead::barf:

In fairness, however, we should look at the fact that Iowa has 99 counties, and I'd be that in 90 of them, there'll be no problem obtaining licenses. I'm rather proud of the fact that the sheriff of my home county, Van Buren County, was standing proudly by the Governor when he signed the bill, as were, IIRC, about six or seven other sheriffs.
