This morning, the Iowa Senate passed SF 2379, a "Shall Issue" bill with objective disqualifiers, by a vote of 44-4. This bill also recognizes any CCW permit or license issued by any other state, other than those issued to Iowa residents. The bill is now in the Iowa House chamber, waiting for a vote, and members of IowaCarry, Inc. have been told by the governor's office that he will sign it if it passes.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...AWESOME!!!!! Even though I live in a county where getting a CCW is relatively easy, my dad doesn't (Even though he's retired LEO and ex-ATFE firearm instructor). I hope it goes through all the way because the restrictions on his permit are absolutely ridiculous (i.e. he can only carry when carrying more than $1000).

It didn't make it to the floor today for a vote, so we have to wait untill monday or tuesday. But it loooks like it will pass this time.

hooray! im in one of the good countys so no problem but 10 min. north? not a chance! this will be a great move for our fair state! lets all pray that it passes!

That is great. Has this already passed the state house? Now I don't have to try to jump through the hoops of getting a non resident permit to be legal in Iowa and will be legal on my home state's permit when traveling there.

Great news, I spent a few years on the IowaCarry forum when I lived in IA. Great folks, with some truly dedicated leaders. I went through unbelievable hoops to get a permit with crazy restrictions ("red" county), awesome news.

Proof that persistent citizens can bring about healthy change.

Glad to hear that Iowa is becoming sensible. For a midwestern state, it has pretty restrictive gun laws. This is a step in the right direction.

does this include any kind of non-resident provisions?

I got a card about this from the NRA, and it said that if Iowa becomes shall-issue, the state will recognize other state's issued permits as well. As for which states, I don't know. It also said that the permit validity time will be increased from 1 year to 5 years, and that would be awesome.

Sounds Great! I passed through Iowa on my way to Minnesota last weekend (from Kansas) and had to stow away my ccw pistol. Maybe next time I go through I'll only have to deal with the crappy roads!

SF 2379 passes Iowa House!

Today, SF 2379 passed the Iowa House of Representatives by a vote of 80-15! After a return to the already-friendly Senate on a procedural matter, the bill will go to Governor Culver, who has already indicated he will sign this legislation!

In a nutshell, this is "Shall Issue", five-year term, honors all other states' permits (so long as the holder is not an Iowa resident), maintains preemption of local laws, has an appeal process for denied applicants, and retraining qualifications can be met by qualifying fire with an NRA-certified trainer.

Upon Governor Culver's signature, and effective 1/1/2011, Iowa will join the 38 other states who now enjoy "Shall Issue", and will fully honor non-residents' licenses issued by any state. If you're an Illinois or Wisconsin resident, get your Utah or Florida license, and come visit the newest "gun friendly" state in the nation.

Thanks to all for your support, be it visible, verbal, or just in spirit.

It's a great day for Iowa!

I think great day is a little under emphasized. Should be GLORIOUS day for Iowa lol. That's great news. Too bad it won't go into effect until next year.

Yeah! we got it! Slowly getting our rights back feels great. would feel better to get them back quickly. oh well.

A gentle BTT for this timely message. Folks, please register your support for SF 2379 by contacting Governor Culver at the above link.
