Hey all,

I have posted this before but if you are in Iowa sound off or shoot me an e-mail. We have a pretty good regional group going that get together and holds fun shoots and BBQ's and we always welcome more. Nothing against em, but here in SE Iowa it seems to be nothing but shotgunners! So far we have members from as far as MO, IL, IN, and a couple that make it up from FL once in awhile.

i've been thinking of starting a thread like this....you can see where i am over to the left there. (Linn county...around the I-380/Highway 30 area ;))

i've been wanting to find some THR folks with decent collections, or even modest ones, so I can (i'll buy ammo of course ;)) try out more guns...find out what I like, and what I don't.

edit: also to find shooting buddies. going to the range is fun, but it's more fun with friends.

come on over

I have a few black rifles and few different handguns. With the diverse group we have though we have everything from .50BMG's to class III dealers!

We also usually have "private" ranges either on someones farm or a local gun club I belong to that on most days we have all to ourselves!

I will keep informed when upcoming shoots are or if you want to come this way sometime give me a shout!

IAJack: where are you?

In my area (CR, IC, Coralville) there are a few ranges. I mostly patronize the one by swisher (by the reservoir off 965). Other than that, there's Linn County Izzak Walton League (77/yr membership), Matzel Bridge by Viola (nice, but out of the way), a shooting club in Central City with a nice setup (again, membership...cheaper than IWL though, and far away). I saw on Wheretoshoot.org that there's a shooting club in North Liberty that I plan to check out.

Other than those, it doesn't seem like there's many places to shoot in/around CR.

And i think it's "eye-wayns" :D

Where?

I am in Oskaloosa in SE/S. Cent area

I am a Ikes member and for about 40 dollars a yr have entire range to myself most days!

If anyone wants my nuber just e-mail me

I am in the Central Iowa area. They closed the really nice public range I used to go to (Badger Creek). Now the nearest one is Banner Just south of Des Moines, but it leaves alot to be desired. It's at the end of a dead end road in a river bottom. When I have been brave enough to check it out, it appears to be some sort of trap/garbage dump/place for undesirables to do un-natural things/ect. One of the guys I used to meet at BC also had third hand knowledge of armed firearm theives that worked there as well. So, being armed is one thing, but not having a second set of eyes is taxing on ones nerves. To give you an idea BC was a 45 minute drive and Banner is like 5-10 tops.

IAJack: I might have to make it over/down there sometime. That's prolly just over an hour away from me...i used to drive to pella to visit a GF on a regular basis, and you're a smidge closer. Sometime when I'm heading out to DM, I should swing down.

give me a heads up when your coming and I will load up the toys

I happen to work in Pella and graduated HS there I am sorry to say

North Liberty, Johnson Co. here.

Future home of the Muslim Youth Camps of America training center located on 106 acres of Federal land unless we can find a way to prevent Harken and the Army Corps from granting the lease. This issue could be a thread in itself.

North Liberty? Heck, i drive through there every day on the way to work (hint: it's a grey/purple building on Oakdale off 965). I get off work at 4:30 M-F...we should go shooting sometime at the "pit" after I get off work.

Rangetime.

Theres a county park southwest of CR with a 600 yard rifle range.

I can't remember the name of the town it's located by, i'll look on a map tommorrow to see if i can find it.

I'm located in Shellrock, north of Cedar Falls about 10 miles. Blackhawk county has a public park with a 100 & 200 yard rifle range,[ 3 benchs] a 50 yard & 25 yard pistol range. with several stations to shoot from.

Free to public use.

12-34hom.

no kidding? i thought i had checked out all the ranges in the area. i'd like to know what/where that is...as long as they've got more than just a 600y range.

Cedar Rapids, myself. I usually go to the Swisher range also, but I just found one in Palo that I feel will become my new hot spot being only 7 miles away. There's also Matzel's bridge about 45 minutes away in B.F. Egypt somewhere...

Sioux County here..

just about a s far from Oskaloosa as you can get and still be in the same state.

I do know some guys from your area though, ever meet a former marine, last name Stein?

You can put me on your list but I doubt I will ever get that far to shoot.

well..

Sounds like alot of you guys are from up towars the CR area, I can travel up that way too. If you can find a place that doesn't cost a mortgage to shoot at and doesnt have any BS rules like rate of fire or mind some really loud booms once in awhile. Heck always willing to go just about anywhere to hang and shoot with like minded ppl and nowhere in Iowa is really that far.

forgot to add..

As a couple mentioned, some of those "county" open shooting ranges scare the begezus outa me..partially why I joined the Ikes. I have seem more usafe crap go on at the one around here than I care to mention. Pretty bad when you feel the need to carry a gun downrange with you not only to keep it from getting ripped off but to return fire if nessacary!

iowa shooters

hi, I'm an Iowegion. live in waterloo. I shoot at a local blackpowder club, 50 yd range, 100 yards if everyone moves their car! Big group of cowboy action shooters. peace,

I believe you might be referring to a range in Washington. I believe that you need some sort of certification that you get from the park ranger in order to be able to shoot there. At that's the way it was when I first arrived in IA 9 years ago.

I belong to the West Liberty Gun Club which has good folks and a 50ft. indoor pistol range. The outdoor range is only for pistols, rimfires, and muzzleloaders - no centerfire rifles - but the range is nice.

The public area (pit) in the Hawkeye Wildlife Area can, indeed, be a little scary due to some of the wildlife that shoots there. Mostly, though, its not too bad for plinking.

What about the AMES area? I grew up there and want to move back.
Any good shooting around Ames?
