Got a tip today that some of the best IPSC open shooters will switch to 9mm major.
With the 160 factor you can get the 9mm up to major using 124gr bullets.
Some of the benefits of using 9mm over 38 super, is the easy and almost free access to once fired 9mm brass.
No more picking brass at matches.

Do any of you shoot this, and which gun do you use?

BETTER IDEA

Just check some load manuals, because you can get a 147-150g up to 165 PF using published loads.

It will be interesting to see if any change to 9mm. Every couple of years there has been a new varient of the 38 super and a couple people from the club get it and end up going to back to super cause it worked and everyone had it. Of course with 9mm your right brass would be around also. Long 9mm's and the super's feed good never tried short 9mm's in a STI or SVI gun.

Then of course there are some that run .40 in Open. I don't see a lot of the .38 Super-Comp and TJ guys switching, they have something that works now. Some of the Super guys maybe, but they also have a lot invested in reliable guns and loading equip. May be a used gun buyers paradise though if they do start switching, just be sure you know what you are getting into buying a used racegun, some get a little shot out.

Ok, I have put on my flame retardant suit. I have some misgivings about the major 9. The 38 Super, which was already at 9mm +P+ velocity had to be hotrodded to make major. Many cases blew in the factory barrels, so fully supported barrels had to be developed to contain this pressure monster. Now 9x19 Parabellum is going to be allowed as major in open class. In case no one has checked, there are huge differences in case construction with the 9x19. Argue that most 9mm guns have supported chambers, I will argue that not all of them have totally supported chambers. Will guns chambered in 9x19 be able to handle a steady diet of 9 major? Are we going to see a lot of parts breaking? Will we see a reoccurence of blown cases? I used to think 9 major was a great idea, but the older I get, the less I like to risk life and limb. Just my thoughts, flame away.

The Vihtavuori Reloading Guide dated 2-01 has a load using a 147 grain bullet and 6.5 grains of N105 that’s clocked at 1125 fps out of a 4 inch barrel.

I had a 9mm Glock 17 Kaboom on me with a "close to max" 147 gr load. The brass has been around the block several times and it just gave way. It didn't hurt the gun, just blew the mag out on the table.

I don't know if anyone is shooting a Glock in Open Class but .. my guess is.. if they are going 9mm major they should change out the glock barrel to KKM or something like that..

Just my 2 cents...

BTW.. I'm a chicken.. I'm gonna stick with 45acp for major.

Captal_de_Buch,

I'm having Tom Novak from Novak's Handgunner Outlet build me an Open gun using a 9x19 cartridge with a G17 frame, Caspian Slide and a Briley barrel and comp an to be quite frank I don't expect any problems with it since the load that I plan on using is the one that I posted earlier and that makes 165 PF.

Just think about why the power factor was reduced in the first place!

You might make major with the 9 since the rule change, just like with the .38 Super, but there was a reason why Major is now 165!

Kobun,

IPSC (Non USA) rules allow for more than one major load configuration unlike USPSA. The IPSC major pfs are 160 PF for Open and 170 PF for Standard and Revolver. USPSA (USA only) has only one major PF and thats 165.

ryucasta,
should have checked the USPSA rules before I posted. :(
I know that there are a few differences in the US rules.
In NFPS (Norwegian Practical Shooting Association) we follow the IPSC rules, but I know that in some countries, like Germany, they have some special rules, like; -no running/walking while shooting, and -no non-see-through walls!

Can't realy figure out why there has to be a difference between USPSA and IPSC though.

Irrespective of which nations "standard" we use, 9's of all stripes(38 Super) included, have to be way off the board to make major. (I mean the old fashioned kind of major) They blew a lot of guns.

If power factor were rated today as we did in the past, with a ballistic pendulum, the difference would be even more noticable.
With the pendulum even the 357 has to use heavy bullets and get up there.

Here's a factory load for you..

WIN 9x23 124SP 1500fps.. and the 125 silvertip makes 1450fps...those are both over 180pf from a 5" 1911..no need for supported chambers ....very, very reliable in all my guns...

anyway..there is load data for 9major..it was no problem shooting 9x21 loaded to 9x19OAL and get the 175PF back in the mid 1990s..bullets as light at 124 and 115 too..9x21 brass and 9x19 brass section the same..so one is not stronger than the other..main reason 9x21 brass became popular was to shoot 9x19 type loads in 9mm base guns (springfield P9) and get around the US rule...

will a lot of people switch...probably not...the big advantage is you can get brass..cheap..cheap...cheap..

Well I just received the G17 I had mentioned in an earlier response. Here it is with 2 of its amigos.
