iron sights for less

Hello everyone. Since my last post bought a o/u 12g shotgun. Now I'm onto my next project to save for. I am looking for bolt-gun with iron sights that would be cheap to shoot, .22 .223 or a cheap milsurp round, that would run me around $300 or less. I already have a M44 Mosin but ammo is scarce here. I'd prefer something around or bigger than .223. Thanks for your suggestions.

I think in your price range you'll need to look for used or milsurp to get one over .22 LR and with irons.

If you didn't need irons, a new Marlin XS7 or XL7 is a good buy.

I know a lot of vendors won't ship ANYTHING to Ill Noise.

Make a road trip somewhere, and stock up on a life's supply of the stuff.
It is abundant and cheap.

Sometimes you can still find an 8mm Mauser for cheap.
Ammo is still cheap when it it pops up.
But, just for plinking, I don't know why you would want another filling dislodger. You already have what you need in the Nagant.

This is one of the things that is really disappointing to me. Hardly anyone makes a rifle with irons, or the ability to add them without having to go to a gunsmith.

I don't scope all my guns, or any of them really.

BDLs or CDLs from Remington are the only ones I can think of. Nobody "wants" an iron-sighted bolt rifle anymore, so of course no companies are going to make them.

(Before I'm accused of trolling, let me just say that I've wanted an iron-sighted bolt rifle in .308 that takes detachable mags ever since I got into shooting. Of course, they don't exist)

If you learned to shoot the way I learned to shoot (at the Chappo Flats Range, now Range 103 Wilcox) then you won't be happy with the iron sight 'options' on new rifles.

In the last week, I've gotten three adjustable peep sights off of e-bay. Two Lyman 57 sme's, and one Redfield #70. These are 'antique' adjustable irons, and I got every one of them for less than $52 each (two for $31 and $33, one for $52). Mine are for mounting on the right hand side of your receiver (Mauser, Springfield 03, Lee-Enfield), but if you use one of the other brands, you'll need one that mounts on the left. This does require drilling and tapping of your receiver.

These sights will deliver the goods, accuracy wise. They'll be instantly familiar to you (with your training). What you need to do, is find the RIGHT RIFLE, and then mount the RIGHT SIGHT on it.

In the last 20 years, a gun drilled, and tappedd from the factory was not all that common. Now it seems to be the only way. Keep looking Remington made .308's with iron sights, and detachable mags.

CZ still makes many of their non "American" models with iron sites, but you won't touch one for $300 anymore. Probably not even used.

BTW CZ makes the 550 FS (Mannlicher stock) in .308 with a detachable magazine and it has open sights. It is also in the $850 range.

With the OP's stated parameters (irons, bolt-action, cheap ammo, >$300) there will be few options. In that price range, there are a number of bolt-action milsurps with irons, but you may encounter the same ammo scarcity problem you now have with 7.62x54R ammo. If you like your M44, I'd redouble efforts to procure more ammo for it. If you're looking for something new, I'd look for something used that shoots a more readily available cartridge. Irons used to be prevalent, so there's still a lot of them out there to be found. Good luck with it.

Spend $50 bucks on gas and drive to Indiana or Missouri and buy $250 dollars worth of ammo for that mosin.
