I picked up a M95/34 STEYR-MANNLICHER in 8x56MM

I did some research and found out that Horndy is the only company making this cartrige? is that correct?

I see 8MM Mauser but I don't think that is the same right ????

8mm isn't 8mm, and 8mm Mauser (aka 8x57mm) isn't the same as 8mm Mannlicher (aka 8x56mm).

I've got one of those carbines, and some Nazi-marked ammo. Never shot the gun, but it's neat. We bought a house without a fireplace, or I'd hang the gun over it.

In an effort to further complicate this comparison; let's take a look at projectile diameters in decimal equivalents. The 8MM Mauser uses a bullet of 7.92 MM or todays .323". The 8X56 uses a projectile nominally measured at .329". So; in answer to the first query, not all 8MM designations are the same.
Obviously, extensive further research and education are required for a more complete understanding of the subject in order to achieve a more harmonious outcome.
Good shooting!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently sold an article to Shotgun News on reloading the 8x56R.

Maybe they will publish it soon and give you some options for feeding your rifle.

Ol Joe, that was a most helpfull link. thank you very much.

I knew in my heart that the two 8MM were different. The Jack A** behind the counter at the box chain store local to me, tried to tell me 8MM was 8MM. They should educate these kids before they let them sell product.

8x56R ammo was rather rare after the surplus dried up until hornady started manufacturing it. Some went to all sorts of ends to make ammo for their guns - like case forming from 7.62x54r and having to either cast or resize bullets to the oddball diameter.

I dunno, rich.
It would help a lot if the customer knew what he was buying, too.
I cannot comprehend the frequent gunboard post "What did I just buy?"

It would help, but seriously, the question "What caliber is this gun?" is probably something that a store should answer truthfully...

To my mind, a commercial dealer with a license had darn sure better know what the heck it's selling and be able to tell the customer exactly what cartridge the weapon fires. In some cases the worst that will happen is wasted money on the wrong ammo. In worst case it could kill someone.

Yes, 8mm Mauser is not related to 8x56R. I like my Steyr M95 for the quality of the machining and workmanship, but it is beastly to shoot. At a $1 a shot and my flinching causing missed paper, I rather shoot my other toys. Ammo shows up every now and then at JG Sales. Buffalo Arms in Idaho (www.buffaloarms.com) generally has bullets (.329) and brass.

Sometimes I'm glad they don't. I've scored some killer deals because the folks in charge were too lazy to do any research.

However, if they don't know exactly what cartridge a gun fires, they need to state that, rather than just say "Oh, it's an 8mm".

for the record, I walked in a big box chain looking for 8x56R and was handed 8MM mauser. I told the guy that is not the same. I never owned anything in 8MM mauser, but i beleived they were two different cals. I was told by him that 8MM is 8MM. I left the box he handed me on his counter.

Then your only fault was excess optimism in expecting to find an obsolete caliber in a chain store. Heck, it has been hard to find the common stuff in a chain store. I am glad to find 9mm pistol ammo while my reloading setup is out of action.

That's one tiny kitty cat, man :what:

Mauser, for the record. And Caliber.;)
