Is a Browning A bolt a decent rifle

I have a 243 Browning A bolt with BOSS. I bought the rifle new in 1995. It is accurate and has never failed or had any problems.

Since I reload, the BOSS doesn't help or hurt the accuracy for me. Since recoil is not a problem for me with the .243, I use the non-ported BOSS tube to keep muzzle blast down. Recoil may be a concern with a 7mm Mag where the ported tube could be useful.

If you don't reload the BOSS may allow you to tune the harmonics for the factory loads you select. I reload and tune the loads for the rifle. I never adjust the BOSS.

I have the A-Bolt 7 mag stainless stalker with Boss. it will shoot 1/2" with good handloads. The Boss adds length and I am not certain if it is a real accuracy enhancer. The Boss works great as a muzzle brake. I love mine dearly but it is long and is not ideal for hunting out of blinds but not a huge issue if you are careful. Mine likes Nosler ballistic tips 150 grains. Drops deer dead every time.
In my opinion it is the best off the shelf factory rifle but the retail price is high and you can get a Tikka for less that will probably shoot as well. I had a Kimber 8400 that cost even more and didnt shoot any better.

I've owned an A-bolt II since the early to mid 90's. It's been my only big game gun since that time. It's never failed me and is as accurate as any I've shot.
I don't know if I could pay a higher compliment to a rifle.

As a bonus it also has the smoothest bolt throw I've ever put my hands on...everyone who cycles that thing wishes theirs was like it.

I like my A Bolt in 30 06. Shoots 1/2 MOA with hand loads, no BOSS. The 60 degree lift is nice, and the fit and finish is second to none.

I just got a stainless stalker in 30-06 last week. Spent 7 rounds sighting it in, the last few were slightly larger than 1/2 inch grouping with cheap federal 180 grain walmart ammo... Most accurate rifle I've ever owned. My first browning bolt gun, but looking at other's responses it would seem that they have pretty good quality control unlike some other companies out there. Btw, I sold a remington 700 sps hunter and am keeping this one... the remmy wasn't a bad gun, grouped fine, but this one is here to stay!

edited to add:

my only complaint is that the trigger is too good :) I'm used to triggers with some creep so I'm used to using them like 2 stage triggers, this one has no creep at all and will take a little getting used to using something that is not sloppy hehe

Dang...this thread is making me want to get my A-Bolt out of the safe and oil it...if for no other reason that I'd get to hold it for a few minutes.

I forgot to mention that mine does have the BOSS on it...which makes it louder than the Tunguska meteorite crash. You'll definitely want to use hearing protection all the time with the BOSS.

That may seem like a no-brainer for folks who only target shoot but I stalk a lot while deer hunting and I must be able to hear everything going on around me. I've come up with an easy solution but it took a few shots without it to convince me of the flaw in my plan.

As someone else mentioned the trigger is phenomenal. Mine also has zero creep. I set the weight on that trigger almost 20 years ago and it's still just as crisp and light as the day I bought it.

Heck...I've never even taken the bolt apart! I need to do that after this season...just to clean and re-grease it.

A bolts are great rifles. Very smooth. I have a 243 with boss I got in the late 90's. I did not like how loud it was so I picked up a solid boss. Very accurate with handloads and factory ammo. Nosler BT's are devastating on deer and hog.

My A bolt in 7mm Rem mag is my "go to" gun for hunting..... it shoots consistent 1 inch groups with just about every off the shelf ammo I've run thru it.... and better groups with my hand loads....
