While it may not be as simple as swapping barrels on a Savage...can a non-gunsmith reasonably & safely remove a factory barrel from a Remington 700 action & replace it with an aftermarket barrel?

If so, what tools would be necessary?

Thanks!

Need a gunsmith who knows how to re-barrel a Remington and has the proper equipment for it.

There IS a company making 'barrel nut remington barrels".... with one of those you can do it yourself IF you can get the old barrel off.

You can definately do it yourself.
1, Action wrench,
2, Barrel wrench,
3, Finish chamber reamer and good qualoty cutting oil
4, Go no-go gauges
You really do need somebody around that's done it before because its easy to mess up a few places.
When your reaming it you have to go real easy so you don't take to much out. Take a few hand turns and drain oil, check with go gauge continue. The barrel will be about .0010 short. It will take a few turns to get but when your close its there fast. You have to plug your muzzle and fill with oil and drain everytime you check your gauges. Once the go gauge starts to close start using the no go gauge. You don't want your bolt closing on it and there's verylittle space to miss it by(trust me).
Before you even unscrew your original barrel. Look in the front mount screw holes and visually inspect the threads for any marring. Take a bit of the right size and through the front screw hole take the thread off the barrel. If you have any marring the barrel will chew up the threads in the reciever, then you'll need a reciever tap( trust me I know) 80 bucks from midwayusa. It reads a lot worse than it is to do but it really helps if you have someone to help that has don it before. You can search my post and read up on my swap that I just did about 2 months ago. If you rent reamers and guages check out www.elkridgereamers.com. Everything cost me 55 bucks for a week use. Good people. Good luck.
