Is a Weaver K4 too heavy to mount on the dovetail groove of a Marlin 60?

Like the title says. I have one mounted now, but have read that heavy scopes slip in the groove pretty easily, and that I should tap and mount a Weaver base if I want to use big scopes.

I also have a Weaver J2.5 (3/4" scope) sitting around, should I switch to that and save the K4 for a larger gun? Might do that anyway, as the K4 throws off the handiness of my Marlin 75C carbine.

Pretty cool old-school steel scopes, made in El Paso. Lots of good stuff made before I was born.

In one word, no. I will give you a tip when it comes to mounting rimfire scopes. Buy the very inexpensive Bushnell virtical split rings. I use them on my Marlin 25MN .22mag and they are the best kept secret in the ring business. They clamp like a vise and hold, solid, forever. I cannot sing thier praise enough, since they are aluminum, they don't bog down a little rimfire with useless weight. Trust me, they'll work:cool: I have been shooting and hunting with this combo for about a year now and my zero hasnt changed one bit. In fact, I frequently target practice at 210 yards and never miss a paper plate.

I would second Jackal's advice.

Though I have not personally tried the Bushnell rings, it makes perfect sense. It is only when one enters the realm of cartridges with substantial recoil that dovetail mounts become iffy. In the case of centerfire rifles dovetailed for scope mounts, the choice of mounts/rings and snugging things together would become more critical, but they do work fine when set up right.
