Is Canada getting rid of it's Gun Registry?

I guess they had some major bills that had to be passed this week and it wasn't done. So will it not get passed?

.

My cousin that lives in AB says it's a done deal. Gone. Don't know the particulars on what other than just the long gun registry, but understand it's a bit more.

Crazy part, QB wants the registry (for QB) transfered to it, and it wants to continue it to enforce it for QB.

Well, I think they're getting rid of the longarm registry, but handguns are going to stay registered. It's a tough fight to get a handgun in Canada. They'll be saving money this way and it is a step in the right direction.

You are correct. The handgun registry has been in effect for many years and will still be in place.

However, the same law that put the long gun registry in place also banned quite a few other weapons and put in other restrictions...I do not know if the whole long gun registry law as passed is/has been repealed, or if only teh registry is gone. That is the part I am not sure of.

For example: My BIL had give up an old Iver Johnson revolver in .32 because it became a banned weapon after the long gun registry law originally passed.

I don't remember exactly the reason. It could have been it had a shorter barrel than 4" barrel, or it may have been because it was a .32 cal? or both,,,,Just don't remember.

Given reports of demonstrators in the prairie provinces making a big deal of burning long gun registration forms, it took some time to get the message across.

Now, how many crimes were solved by the handgun registration over all these years? None according to some citing RCMP reports. How much money has been wasted on the handgun and long gun registration schemes? And what beneficial crime fighting policies could that money have paid for?

What should we learn from Canada?

Lots of "process" pending. Canadian Parliament is now adjourned for the holidays. Realistically, the bill (C-19) will receive Royal Assent around Feb/2012. (US rough equiv milestone would be Presidential signature).

registration of long guns(shotguns and rifles) will be scrapped,

a Federal Firearms license will still be required to legally possess all firearms,

strict laws on handgun and restricted firearms laws will remain "as is",,,

Quebec keeps threatening to "separate",,,

but they do not keep their promises,,,

this is disappointing to MANY Canadians !:banghead:
