is faster better when loadin .204?

Just got back from the range yesterday and had eight different load test to do for my new remington SPS varmint. I saw a very interesting trend.

it seems the milder loads with a 40 grain v-max were a bit erratic (largest measured slightly over 1'' smallest was about .8'')

however the best load was a few grains over maximum reccomendation, it was showling the slightest hint of wanting to crater the primer but not quite, and the cases didnt grow. that load however was turnig in a lot of great groups. best measured .400 and largest was .754.

Just curious if anyone had siilar experience it faster it went the tighter it got. which is usually the opposite for my biger bores.


any thoughts? i am playing with the idea of moving down to 34 or 32 grain bullets bcause my twist is reccomended for maximum 40 grin bulets.

I've been loading Varget over the Honady 32 gr bullet and been averaging slightly under 1/2 " groups out of my Ruger 1B and am not exceeding maximum loads. :)

I'm using W748 with a Sierra 39g blitzking with great results... a couple grains under max, with no over pressure signs. I haven't gotten to chrono this load yet, but it sure does group well. The Sierra's shoot much better for me than the vmax's.

I bought a couple hundred of the 32g vmax bullets when I was starting with the caliber. They do OK, but only if I load 'em up fast. I had one batch of these that pierced a couple of primers. Backed off a bit to relieve the pressure, and accuracy fell. I'll not buy any more of these 32's when they're gone.
 
powder ideas?

I am currently using some IMR 4895 and Win 748 for some testing, I have heard and read that Varget and BLC(2) have good results. what are your best grpuping powders, like i sadi velocity isn't key (unless faster is actually better for this load)
 
My .204 (CZ) doesn't seem to like the hyper-velocity stuff. Moderate loads, like 39g going 3600-3700 work best.

Sure...be sure to work up accordingly but this load is safe in my gun and well within listed loads.

Federal Match Small Rifle Primers

Shoots like a dream. Who knows if it will work for you? Be sure to post back if you try it out.
 
If you want to shoot lighter bullets, my CZs (varmint & american) both like the 32gr blitzking with 27.3gr of Benchmark.

This is out of the varmint, 5 shot group, forgot the chrony this day so not sure what the velocity is.
