Is firing "novelty" shots through a fixed modified choke ok? Say if you shoot flechettes or whatever else they sell like bolo rounds for fun, is it ok to fire them through a choke?

Sure.
Except the surplus flechettes they use are hardened steel, designed to be used in a metal canister in military artillery beehive rounds.

If one or more hardened steel flechette vanes cut through the plastic shotgun wad?
They will tear your barrel a new one, regardless of what choke it is.

There have also been numinous reports of "dragons breath" novelty shells getting stuck in the bore and melting a hole in the barrel, or even starting forest fires.

That is a major consideration this year with the hot dry weather and out of control wildfires all over the country.

If you want fireworks?
I'd just buy fireworks.

They cost much less then the $4.50 a pop the shells cost!
With no risk to your shotgun.

I had an expendable 18.5" no choke barreled shotgun for novelty rounds -- dragon's breath, bird bombs or Olin meteor signal flares.

If fletchettes were anything more than a novelty, why did the Army go back to 00 for shotguns?

I rank 12ga fletchettes in the same category as Dardick Trounds and GyroJet rocket bullets. Looked good on paper, failed in the field.

Actually I heard flechettes were more effective in shot than pellets and they chose to go back to pellets because they feared it violated the Geneva Conventions but anyways can you fire slugs through a choke? or does it have to be cylinder bore?

I've put foster slugs through an extra full turkey choke. Inaccurate as all get out, but no damage.

You heard wrong then.

12 Ga shotgun flechettes in Viet Nam proved almost totally ineffective in fact.

105mm and 155mm Beehive artillery rounds did work quite well however.

Throwing 8,000 or more flechettes in one shot out of a howitzer worked much better then throwing 20 flechettes out of a 12 ga shotgun!!
