Went to my local wallyworld today. I'm always looking for the clearance tags in the sporting goods dept. Well today They had a Model 710 .243 for $210. Hmmmm, I said to myself. I know most say "no", but for $210 I think it could be a deal.

For a strictly cheap knock around "don't care if I drop it rifle", I would say sure. If you have any taste for even halfway decent quality however, look elsewhere.

Stay far, far away from it. Your handle is Mossberg Maniac, right? Check out the Mossberg ATR rifle- about the same price range, but far, far, better quality. You should also look at Savage. If you want a Remington, look at the 700 series. Look for used rifles, too. Its the end of deer season, so you should not have any trouble. Search 710 on this board to see why to stay away from it.

Thanks for the replies guys. I took the advice. I ran across a marlin 30-30 336w they had in stock. I talked the manager into letting me have it for 10% off. So I ended up with it for $268.00 out the door. Not bad, I left outta there feeling pretty good about the whole thing. Thanks again guys.:)

You just picked up an excellent rifle! Enjoy!

(and it will kill a deer and a lot of other animals just fine, contrary to the opinion of those who believe only in the latest supermagnums)

And the Marlin is made of wood and steel- a far contrast to the 710. I don't know how expensive .243 ammo is, but .30-30 is about $9 a box at Wallyworld in the Federal flavor...

You also might want to look into the Hornaday Leverevoloution ammunition- turns the .30-30 into about a 300 yard cartridge...
