Is my Mosin barrel shot out...

(ok, about 5 of those shots were sitting using a rest)

This is my 2nd time out with my Mosin Nagant M38 (1943, counterbored) and only the 2nd time I ever shoot a rifle for more than a round or two. At 50 yds I was shooting a bit higher and at about 85yds I was completely out of the black. Obviously, I'm going to have to adjust my sights for longer distances but I'm loving the group at 25 yds. (Btw, that low flyer at 6:00 wasn't a flyer, it was done on purpose because I was having trouble seeing the holes in the black)

My conclusion is that my rifle is a pretty good shooter but I'd like to know what y'all experienced riflemen think

What I can see it does look good.

But if you wanted people to really be able to drink it in, you should have taken the shell sock off the stock before clicking the pic.


If you want a good idea of it's accuracy you need to bench it and shoot it. Start at 50 and then go to 100 yards.

If you want to know the size of the bore (to better match ammo with it), you need to slug it.
 
also, get some heavier stuff, 170 grains and up. Look for silver bear, brown bear, in the 170s', 180's, and the heaviest is 200's, I think 203 to be exact or 205's. they are stunningly accurate, the heavier you go. Allthough you will notice a huge drop at 100 yds, when you jump up to the 205's, and your shoulder will let you know as well!!!!!
 
They counter board the rifles to return the accuracy. Yes your rifle is shot out and has been given a second chance. 25yrds for a Mosin is point blank and even with a sewer pipe for a bore it should \shoot as well as the nut behind it.

definitly lose the stock sock.

hard to tell anything about the mosin at 25 yds. i have the same rifle and shot it today. i love mine.

try it at 50, and if your doing pretty good there, move to 100.

very nice start with it.

bag it, work on your breathing and trigger.

you will only get better.
 
I can't believe that with the recoil on this rifle that the cuff stays in place anyway. Does it?

Nope. :D It never stays in place but regardless what some might say, I like the stock sleeve alot. For those that wanted to see it in its natural beauty here you go:

Next time at the range I plan on sticking to only 50-100 yds, now that I know that my sights need to be adjusted a bit. This should be next Sat. so just wait for the pics. We shall see what bench accuracy is with sights adjusted and 3 different types of ammo - today all I had was Bulgy LB, this week I shall be receiving some Russian surplus and some Silver Bear 203gr soft points.

I'm also going to try to master the Finnish stripper clips that arrived today :D

Thanks! I already tried the tutorial, it didn't work too well for me, the clips either need a break-in, need some oil, or are no good. No biggy, I didn't pay much and I've only had them for about 8 hrs anyway. To be honest I'm pretty quick loading the mag from the stock sleeve, even though so many seem to hate it...

I love the interest that the Mosin draws, and I love that there are so many helpful people on THR :)

oh, and I love the price of 7.62x54r ammo :D
 
I have the M38 and M44,my kid brother has the M91/30.My M38 is counter bored,and will still smack the 200 yard gong.I shoot at the 25 first tho' just to see where it hit.
 
either that target is massive, or those arnt .30 cal holes.

The target is about 2'x2', a paper target on a wooden frame. And I can assure you that those are 7.62x54r bullet holes at 25 yds.

I don't blame you for being doubtful... Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see...

I say get a new rifle that has a crummy stock but good bbl and swap stocks cause that one is beautiful.

sorry but the grouping isnt.

Hogman: Beautiful rifle.

Last spring a buddy with my 44 could not hit the target at 50 yards with about five-eight rounds, standing. The folded bayonet should not really be a factor at that range, from what I've often read.

Maybe it is the trigger pull mechanism, or what else do you guys think?
He was not a new guy with guns (about 40 years old), but had never tried a MN. I'm still a bit of a novice and can much shoot better with my other guns than a 44: Mini 14, 30, SKS and old ('40s) Savage .22.
 
Thanks to all. I was lucky enough to get a pretty good deal on the rifle, ammo included, and its been a blast to shoot. I love the looks I get at the range and I love to see people's reactions when they feel the blast and see the ball of fire :eek:
 
Just got back from the range. I'm getting better groups at 50 yds now, next step is to see what I can do to smooth out the trigger.

It seems that the new Russian LB I have is a bit more accurate than the Bulgy LB. The Silver Bear 203 gr soft points are a whole different animal, they recoil a little more than usual and they shoot lower. Safe to say I'm going to stick with the surplus LB from now on, they're cheaper and accuracy is more consistent (although I wouldn't hesitate to buy HB surplus in bulk if the price was right). I doubt this will ever be a 100 yd rifle, but with some practice and the right ammo I am sure I will be able to get 1"-2" groups at 50 yds, which is good enough for me.

Also, I am happy to report that the Finnish Tikka stripper clips I picked up on Ebay work flawlessly. If anyone has problems with their clips I suggest they first read Cosmoline's tutorial, if problems persist try a light coat of CLP on the inside of the clips and leaving them loaded for a few days, it sure worked for me. It seems the new ones need a little break-in to loosen them up.

I do love this rifle. I have lost count of the number of people who have asked me about it at the range. Everyone comments about how loud it is and I've gotten several odd looks when I've broken out the Windex at the end of the session. Like I tell all those that ask about the rifle, "It's loud, it's powerful, the ammo is cheap and it shoots a ball of flame out the muzzle. Whats not to love?"
