I hope to see more of these at Academy. Looks to be new stock for 2008.

i got mine about a year ago at academy and all they had was laminated  it really does look quite nice...

Yes, the 870 express went to all laminate on wood guns last year instead of the stained whatever hardwood they previously used. As noted it looks better, it's also better at holding up to the elements, and I'm sure it's less expensive. Black synthetic is still offered too of course.
I dunno, good ole walnut is still number one in my book.
You can still get walnut on an 870 Wingmaster or Police. They haven't offered walnut on the express line in years to my knowledge. Walnut does look best to me as well, especially against the highly polished blue steel of a Wingmaster.

My Express has laminate and I bought it in '07.

It is very nice compared to the old orangey bland wood

My '93 wasn't even stained. It's actually a painted-on hard-as-nails high-tech something or other finish. After knocking some of it off on a dock I realized the wood grain didn't match the painted grain. Oh well.

I couldn't find anything to take it off; laquer thinner, alcohol, 3 or 4 kinds of paint remover. And I didn't feel like scraping or sanding it off, so I finally just touched up the dinged area with a combination of stains and shoe polish.

Couple other things I noticed in the store:

The receiver no longer says "Express Magnum" just "Express" yet is still 3in chambered.

The spiney nasty rib of '06-'07 has been replaced with a smoother squiggly rib.

umm... direct of Rem's site:

"...and a no-frills satin finish hardwood stock and fore-end."

Have a new gun that I bought Dec 07' from Basspro (which has a pretty good turnover rate) and it is hardwood.

Look at the pictures. The youth gun is satin hardwood. The other two are definitely laminate. All we've seen in the shop direct from Remington and from distributors for the better part of the last year have been laminate. My guess is that the web designer put up the new adult gun pics & layout and just recycled the item description & youth gun pic from a previous update of the web page.

I can take a pic of my 870 express.

I could have swore the fore-end was some kind of wood. Didn't really inspect the stock.

Expresses with the laminate stock have been around for a year. The chain stores like Dicks and Gander Mountain are still selling the hardwood stock version. Probably because they can buy them cheaper from Remington.
