I came across the photos of the 2012 shot show and have found a new love that has to make its way into my collection. The legendary, the iconic, the classic, MP40! I have always been drawn to this incredile gun, and now its affordable for the average joe, and in a caliber you can afford to shoot. I have to have one! But wait....i came across a pic that said something about the gsg mp40 being an SBR. Is this true? How many "average joe's" are gonna drop an additional $200 on a gun thats suppose to be a fun, inexpensive, .22 plinker? Isn't that the purpose of a .22 MP40 anyways? Cheap, fun shooting?

If anyone knows anything about this SBR issue, i would really appreciate any info. Just so i know if i have to save up an EXTRA $200 for my new toy :barf:

Thanks guys

If the firearm has a buttstock and a barrel of less than 16" -- and/or an overall length of less than 26" -- it would be an NFA Title II "Short Barreled Rifle."

They seem to have several options:

1) Sell it with no stock and it is a handgun.
2) Fold the stock and weld it shut -- also a handgun.
3) Make the barrel longer than the original to get over the 16"/26" length restrictions.
4) Permanently attach a fake silencer or muzzle device to bring the barrel length up to 16".
5) Try to sell it as an NFA item.

So far, no major manufacturer has decided to release an NFA version of their arms, expecting that the time has not yet come when there is enough of a market to make back their money on a gun that has to transfer on a Form 4.

I've read that they are considering the faux suppressor route. Same bask thing they did with the GSG-5. And like the GSG-5, it would beg to be SBR'd.

FWIW, I'm more excited about the Stg 44.

I really like the STG44 too, I would buy that before the AK-47. But I have a thing for sub machine guns. Thats why i had to have the GSG5-pk when they first came out, before HK sued and they had to change the look. I don't like the new ones...glad i got mine when i did.

ATI has said that it's gonna be 2013 till they even have ones for testing. So your in for a wait. I'm guessing like dogmush they will go fake suppressor for a rifle version. I hope they do a "closed" folding stock, but integrated into the end cap so it can be sold as a pistol, but can be removed after approval and a correct rotating stock installed.

Much like how the GSG-5 P & PK just had an end cap that could be taken off and the folding/sliding stock attached. Easier and cheaper than cutting down a rifle length barrel.
