I've got a gov't sized gsr. I was giving some thought to selling and picking up a colt gold cup, but now it's growing on me. i put a s&a arched msh and mag well on it so it feels better in the hand. the trigger isn't too bad, and it looks good. i'm still on a quest for a semi custom or custom 1911, and the gold cup has always been in my mind.

reading through the spec i don't see a lot on the gold cup that the gsr doesn't already have. biggest difference seems to be the adjustable sights, and that is easy enough to correct.

A fusion may be in my future.

If you shoot the GSR well keep it. The Colt is a great gun but you are going to loose money on the trade in and the Gold Cup IMHO in not a semi custom gun. It is a high end production gun.

Shoot the GSR save your money and get a ture semi custom down the line.

Hello chutestrate, I have owned several Gold Cups. Most were '70 Series purchased NIB and one, more recent, Gold Cup Trophy model. While I think they are nice looking guns, most were disappointing in the quality of fit and finish. My first one, purchased new in the early '70s, IIRC, was excellent and is still in regular use within the family. I think I just got lucky with that one. The '70 Series and later Gold Cups, within my experience, have extra "features", but display no extra effort at all in fitting, materials, finish or accuracy. The Gold Cup Trophy was the worst. The pre '70 Series Gold Cups Do seem to have received extra care in fitting and finish, etc. The down side for me on the pre '70 Gold Cups is that they have the lightened slides for more reliable function with the intended, lightly loaded, SWC ammo. I always used ball or similar ammo. I was always concerned that I would crack a lightened slide with the heavier ammo I used. The lightened slides were supposed to have ended with the introduction of the '70 Series Gold Cups, but I have personally examined guns in the 70N24xxx range that still had the light slide. I do have a friend who has one of the early '70 Series Gold Cups with the lightened slide and he has shot it for years with ball or similar ammo, without cracking the slide or any other issues. I have not owned a GSR, but I don't know that you'd be getting a better gun in a Gold Cup... ymmv

An adjustable sighted model would probably be close in specs and features to a Gold Cup. Be advised that the GSR is somewhat problematic to find a holster for, due to its slide contours. I had serious functioning problems with a Revolution Carry - to the point of the gun being replaced - but this was in 2007-08.
