Is the XDM worth the extra $ over the Xd?

It's prettier. I think it is supposed to be match grade stuff-barrel & trigger along with a higher capacity and adjustable backstraps.

If the features that make it more expensive are features you are willing to pay more for, then yes.

It's just like anything else about firearms: it's all about personal preference.

Very true. That's my question. Is the trigger better? Is it more accurate with a better barrel? Or did they just throw on a changeable backstrap and a few other things to make it look at little more cool and jack up the price?

Well, I have both, and while the triggers feel different, I don't think one is better than the other.

The interchangeable backstrap is a non-issue for me... I use the middle size which is the same as the XD.

The extra capacity is nice.

The more aggressive checkering on the XDm is something I don't like about it. The XD is much more comfortable to hold and fire because of it.

The barrel makes no difference as far as I can tell, but I may not be skilled enough to tell anyhow.

I'm perfectly happy with the standard XD, they run right at $500 out here. The XD-M runs about $650, not worth the extra $150 to me. I agree with the comment about the agressive checkering on the XD-M, don't like it. I prefer my standard XD. I can do without the 4 extra rounds, if 12 doesn't get it done, I'm screwed anyway.:p

The "M" has the longer upgraded bbl (better accuracy and range potential), a shorter reset trigger, higher cap and a less Glock-like shape/prettier; and these features especially appeal to 'deep pocket' competition shooters.

Some of these features were being added to the XD before the "M" came out through 'custom' work that cost more than the "M" version bottom line. XD"M" still has several more 'custom' options available from the XD Custom Shop to make it a "tuned" gun..

Do they want your money? You bet!!
Is it a 'better' gun? Rod Leatham says so!

Go to a gun shop and pick up an XD. See how much side-to-side slop there is at the front of the slide and then at the rear. Next do the same with an XDm. Just for grins try it with another semi-auto; maybe that $1,300 singlestack setting on the top shelf that everyone ogles at.

If you can, take the same 3 guns to the range. Try a couple of 10 round magazines in each pistol at a distance of say 7 yards. Give it your best effort. Don't try to emulate the IPSC grandmasters with the sub 1 second double taps.

If your experience is like mine, the XDm comes in dead last with my XD45 tactical coming in 2nd and my custom 1911 coming in way, way, way ahead.

the "m" stands for mediocre in my book.

Yeah, and the super tight tolerances of the $1300 pistol, makes it worthless outside of a range gun. The slightest amount of dirt or foreign material will lock it up. Trust me I know, buddy of mine bought a $1400 Kimber, if he doesn't keep it spotless, its a jam-o-matic.

The XD will run like a glock, dirty, clean, fouled, doesn't matter.

It gets better. Someone dumped his .40 sub down a Porta-Potty last year. Dumb ass took it out of the holster and laid it next to the seat, damn thing slid right down the hole. It stayed there for a week until they came to pump it out. Hosed it off and cleaned the barrel and put in a couple of new rounds then shot it. Yep still works.

I wouldn't take a Kimber if it was free, took 500 rounds for the "break in", before it would stop jamming a couple times per session, according to him. No thanks.:neener:

500 rounds? What did he do with the rest of the morning?

There as several things that can cause an auto-loader to jam. With a little attention to detail though, most of em can be very reliable. Not all can be reliable and accurate. A good Kimber can be, ... in the right hands.

Oh, by the way, the .40 in the porta-potty, that's a classic! :)

Well, I just decided on the XD tactical. Felt better in my hands and was less expensive. I can't believe people criticize the trigger. Mine is crisp and short. Feels awesome. Really looking forward to shooting it. I"m actually a revolver guy but had to get a 9mm just as a change of pace.

Did you buy it new? If not, it's possible someone already addressed the trigger issue. If it is box-stock, then you need to treat yourself to a customized trigger to see what the difference is.

Also, www.cdnnsports.com has Mec-Gar 18 rd 9mm mags for the XD, so you only give up one round to the XD-m

I did buy it new and I sure wouldn't want it any lighter or shorter. Maybe I just got a freaky good one but I've been shooting a long time and this is really good. I had an XD about 3-4 years ago and it didn't have a trigger like this. I had a Glock 17L with the 3 pound trigger that was not anywhere near as nice. I've shot custom 1911's that obviously had smoother, lighter pulls but I would never want something like that for defense. Just me.

Match grade barrel, minimal reset trigger, much higher capacity, etc. IMHO, yes it is worth the extra paper.
