Is there a good 1911 in 9mm

Kimber, Para, and STI offer new 4" 9mm 1911s. My co-worker/friend is considering the Kimber. And he buys HKs most of the time.

The 9mm in a 1911 is a great combination. Too many folks who get wrapped around "its needs to be a .45" and won't consider it, and lose out on a good combination. With ammo prices spiking the way they are, shooting something chambered in 9mm becomes even more attractive.

Another option one looking for such a combination should consider: any 1911 chambered in 38 Super can be easily converted to 9mm. When I was searching for a .355 sized LW Commander for my 9x23 built, I looked at both 9mm and 38 Super Colt products. This was before Colt just re-introduced their LW Commander in 38 Super.

I attached the gun I had built. It shoots 38 Super, 9x23, and 9mm with the supplied extra barrel. These are great platforms, and far from range-only use, they make great carry guns, even in just 9mm. The trigger on a 1911 is impossible to beat. Chambering it in 9mm makes it the most controllable one can get a 1911 to shoot. Compared to 45 ACP? Its quicker, recoils a good bit less, and costs much less for practice.

The venerable Star Model B came in 9mm and 9X23.

A buddy of mine just picked up a B and a BM. While the B does little for me, I'm hoping to pick up a BM myself.

Just to clarify, the 9x23 Winchester and the Star 9x23 Largo are not the same caliber.

But those Star's in 9mm are a great inexpensive alternative to a higher priced 1911.

I was in the market for a 9mm 1911 a few years back. From my research it seemed like most of the problems people had with them involved magazine issues. Also, back then 9mm 1911 magazines were somewhat hard to find. Has that situation changed?

Been giving a Springfield Armory 1911A1 in 9mm (fixed sights, stainless steel) serious consideration since I acquired three ss 1911 mags in 9mm. How's that for justifying a pistol purchase??

BullfrogKen,

Yes to your 1911 in 9mm analogy. Even though I reload, sometimes I'm tight on time and store bought 9mm is about 1/2 the price of .45acp.

I built my own 9mm, using a .38 Super platform. I've had problems, but for me, it's been fun working them out. If someone would make an affordable 1911 in 9mm, they would sell as many as they wanted.

Here's my Rock Island/Essex/Fusion match barrel equipped 9mm.

mnw42,

38 Super mags will work just fine.

steelyblue,

Try Metalform. They're pricey buying onesy and twosies, but if you can get in on a group deal here, they're much more attractive price-wise. Metalform 9mm mags use a spacer in the rear of the mag body to fill in the gap not needed with the shorter round.

Springfields are another good option. The Springfield mag dimples the front of the mag body to accomplish the same goal. 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.

Price-wise, if you can jump in on a group deal, or organize a group buy yourself, the Metalforms become a great buy.

Or you can always simply buy 38 Super mags, that way when you fit your 38 Super barrel, you won't have to buy another set of magazines.

I'm at around 2,500 through the new Les Baer 9mm. This does not have the 1.5" guarantee. Using Metalform Springfield style mags. Bought three with the dimple in the front, one with the removable floor plate and one 38 super with the rounded follower. Most of the feeding/ejection issues are resolved. Working on finding the most accurate reloads. I have always loved 9mm, and this is a great gun. It cost about twice what a Springfield would cost.

The two best magazines I have for 9mm "1911s" are the Metalform 9 round .38 Super with their rounded, skirted follower; and the Metalform-Springfield Front Ramp type.

If you want ten rounds for IDPA ESP, the Metalform and Tripp designs are pretty good. I did have to adjust my OAL, the Metalform has a peculiar combination of the front ramp and the rear spacer, which restricts OAL to about 1.15" in my magazines and guns.
