Is there a good site for gel reports?

I'm looking for a site that lists ballistics gel reports, to include things like penetration depth, expanded width, and cavity volume for various calibers and specific loads. The primary reason is ammo selection.

Just be cautious about accepting the data as conclusive. As has been reported many times, how it hits, what's being worn, and shot placement can override how it appears to do in a block of gel.

Still not seeing data on volume. The only chart I've seen is on the AR15 ammo FAQ, but that only covers a few calibers and loads. Maybe I should follow the links there.

tnoutdoors9 on YouTube Most of what he does is ammo test !!! He is good & no b.s.

"Volume" of what? Permanent cavity? Temporary cavity?

The FBI calculates permanant cavity volume simplistically (and incorrectly). It calculates the area of the expanded bullet times penetration depth. It assumes the diameter of the permanent cavity remains constant from beginning to end of the wound track. In reality the diameter of the permanent cavity decreases with penetration, because as the bullet's velocity decreases with penetration it gives soft tissues more time to stretch and move out of the bullet's path. At the end of the wound track the diameter of the permanent cavity can be very small.

None of it means anything anyhow.... The diameter it achieves in gel is not necessarily the diameter it will be when shot into a human.

Just carry a premium SD load from one of the "Big Four" and you'll be ok.

A guy who goes by DocGKR on various forums is probably the most trustworthy commentator I've seen. Some sites do have indices of actual ballistics tests but it's a lot of work to standardize the results since they use somewhat different methods.

Pubmed.gov actually has some, not sure how many. Just search ballistic + other search terms (e.g. ballistic gel, ballistic performance, ballistic handgun, ballistic jhp...).

i nver found gell a good substitute for determining ballistics performance....

and...

Ordnance gelatin is an engineering evaluation tool to assess the ability of JHP handgun bullets to expand robustly. It is the most valid soft tissue simulant currently available. JHP handgun bullets are designed to expand in soft tissues. In a defensive shooting the kinds of tissues we are trying to destroy are all soft tissues.

More info challenging popular misconceptions of gelatin testing can be found at: http://www.firearmstactical.com/tacticalbriefs/2006/04/03/0604-03a.htm

This is what I was referring to. I'm not sure how they found it, but they had volume, diameter, and depth listed.

It appears you'll need to contact the whoever posted the info at AR15.com to learn how the "volume" was calculated, if the information isn't already presented.
