It never occured to me before, but maybe a checklist to follow might be a good idea for this hobby. Just a short list of items to go over each time.
Anyone who has ever flown in a small plane has probably had first hand experience with how the pilot has a checklist of items to go over each and every time before they fly, even if they just landed the plane 5 minutes earlier. And a good pilot is very anal about every item on the checklist each and every time. It doesn't take long, but its a life saver.
I don't currently keep a log, I just write particulars down on a 3x5 card. But a simple, printable list, customized to each style of loading (might even be slightly unique to the equipment being used), and posted at the reloading bench might keep the occasional mistake from ever happening. Even better, is a log that could be double checked at a later time in case any questions arise, especially if there's a recall. I know some people keep a log, but I'm talking about a checklist of items to do and verify with each session.
It should be something simple, not too long, cover all important items, and probably include a log.
Maybe something like this:
1)Start log, list:
a)Load # (for tracking - like a lot #), Caliber
b)Bullet weight, type, listed OAL
c)Powder - name, lot#, type, listed max charge & source
d)Primer
2)Weight first charge
3)Weight of first bullet
4)OAL of first charge
...
x)Weight 5th charge
...
commence loading
y)Things to check when adding primers
a)Bullet weight
b)Charge weight
c)OAL
etc
I don't have time to make a decent list, but any ideas would be good.
I know its anal, and I like to just get to loading, but a short, concise, practical list can be a nice reminder to keep things from getting missed.
