I picked up a ton of brass fired out of AR's at the range the other day. Both in .308, and in .223. What I noticed though is that about 90% of it has deep dings, or scratches in the neck where it looks like it hit something hard coming out of the gun.

Here is an example of what I'm talking about.

Are these still safe to load, or am I risking split necks? I know that dings in the body of the case will pop out when fired, but I'm not sure about the necks.

Resize them, and when you shoot them most of the remaining defects will iron out under pressure.

And yes, it probably is from hitting something on the way out of the chamber.

Yes, a lot of them look dinged from hitting something, but a few (mostly the 308) are cut like something cut them somewhat coming out. Glad to hear they are okay to reload.

Those will probably iron out when sized if those shown were the worst looking ones you had. I only worry when there is already a deep gash/split or the neck is crushed flat and there is a crease/gouge after resizing. If after sizing the marks still are there it might be a problem but usually the neck will split when resized if they are really bad. If the marks are still there load a couple of them and try them out to see, if they can be reloaded 4 or 5 times without problems you should be good to go. I would not load up a bunch of them without first trying a sample lot of the worst ones to make sure they will not be a problem. Hope you can use all the brass you got.:D
