Is this knife legal in Houston, TX?

Kalaj Kutter Karambit - Stainless Steel Talon

The new Stainless Steel "Talon" karambit pocket knife is
the best self defense/ tactical item currently available.
This knife will deter any assailant, & fits easily in the front
watch pocket of a common pair of jeans. By dropping your
first finger through the hole of your Talon, you are now armed !
With custom no slip grip handle and shined to a mirror finish.
1 3/4' fixed blade (false edge). All Kalaj Kutter Stainless Steel Talons
karambits are hand crafted from 100% recycled Stainless Steel.

Texas law makes it illegal to carry (not merely possess) an "illegal knife" outside your own premises, premises under your control, or in your vehicle.

Illegal knife is defined as:
Sec. 46.01. DEFINITIONS. In this chapter:
(6) "Illegal knife" means a:
(A) knife with a blade over five and one-half inches;
(B) hand instrument designed to cut or stab another by being thrown;
(C) dagger, including but not limited to a dirk, stiletto, and poniard;
(D) bowie knife;
(E) sword; or
(F) spear.

Since it certainly has a blade under 5.5" and (B), (D), (E), and (F) do not apply, we only need worry whether it could be considered a dagger.

The dictionary defines dagger as "a sharp pointed knife for stabbing." The common interpretation of the Texas prohibition on daggers is that double-edged blades are prohibited for carry.

Since the linked knife is single-edged (as far as I can tell) certainly appears to be more of a slashing/cutting blade than a stabbing blade, I would think it would be legal to carry.

I am not a lawyer; this advice is worth exactly what you paid for it; etc.

I can't speak to TX law, but I will say that anyone attempting to sell a 1.75" ring-knife as "the best self defense/ tactical item currently available," should be looked at askance.

Askance, and while backing slowly away so as not to alarm them when you start giggling uncontrollably.

Or maybe they meant it was the best self defense/ tactical item currently available on that page? Yeah, I'd agree with that, given that it's the only thing on that page.

They might make a neat product, but their marketing spiel makes the "Extreme Shock" ammo guys look well-grounded.

Go to store and get a Buck 110, The Police in TX will not bat a eye with it in the case on your belt. Then you will have a solid real Knife.

+1.

I was going to say that I think it is funny how it is advertised as the best self defense/tactical item on the market, but you guys beat me to it - but I said my pice anyway. So, yea.

get yourself a nice spring assisted knife. when i'm delivering pizzas i have one in my pocket or palmed beneath the pizza bag. they are legal and they open as fast or faster than an automatic or butterfly knife (i own both and that's a fact not an opinion). i have one with a nice stiletto style blade with the bayonet style point. i carry it as a box cutter of course.

Legal, but junk. A blow to the back of the blade can overcome the user's grip, and cut his thumb. Legal, but junk.

Personal input

For almost a decade now, i have carried daily either of the following folders, as i financially cannot afford a concealed permit to carry my 1911a1 .45---4" cold steel gunsite tanto / crkt wes crawford "falcon". I carry tucked into the top of my pants with the pocket clip on the outside & usually have a 1 3/4" belt over the top.

Knife is secure, partially concealed, & will not fall to the ground accidentally to be lost. Heck i attend church with police officers & they all know i carry. Even my pastor carries a big folder to church & he is 70 years old & an inactive duty status us marine who preaches the gospel---ooo-rah & amen !!!!!

no offense, but i agree with Hso: that piece of crap can barely be considered a knife. i don't see how any leverage could be used to perform any real cutting tasks; being that it's just a ring, the moment it made contct with a hard target, it would just spin on your finger. if anything, it looks like a castrated La Griffe.

The ad says false edge, so doesn't that make the thing just a hook? Looks to me like anyone who tries to actually use that is asking for a broken or dislocated finger.

looks like an oversized can opener to me......pull that on some perp they liable to die laughing:rolleyes:

but what one fellow said above, just get a good buck knife! can't fail with that.:D
