Just passin through!
Hi all, early this week I took my brother, who was visiting for the holidays to the range with me for an little plinking. He has shot very little previously...a couple shots from a handgun and the same from a rifle. He was all excited about spending the day shooting with me. I brought along my Beretta 92FS 9mm, Ruger GP100 .357 magnum, Dan Wesson PMA-S 1911, CZ52, and 2 of my SKS's an M59 and an M59/66 A1. We went through the basics of firearm safety, keying on the 4+1 rules of firearms, functionality of each firearm, loading, unloading, safeties etc. Then I let him start shooting...
He was having a ball...going from one to the other to the other etc....he turned out to be a great shot and had good fire control. I chalked that up to my great teaching ability and form :what: :neener: . Seriously I think it is more due to the fact he has great upper body stregnth. (he is a furniture mover and trucker). The strange part comes to him shooting the SKS battle rifle. I went over the how to's etc and let him have at it... Let me preface this with the fact he is 100% right handed....He had great difficulty even getting the rifle in place. One of those things where I was watchin him and yelled ....what the heck is your problem??? Looked like he had some sort of muscle disfunction.... He told me he could not get a functional good grip on the rifle. He then switched it to lefty grip....sighted it in and off he went...what the heckis that all about...I have never seen anything like it. A total righty needing to shoot lefty....Now I am one of those ambidexterous righty types myself and can target/shoot with both eyes open....I can do anything but write lefty. I can shoot all my guns lefty accurately enough though not near as good as righty. But I can't shoot my rifles lefty. Any thoughts???? thanks....mack

The SKS does have a short stock and LOP. Maybe he has some kind of physiological anomaly on the right side?

I've always had a slight problem getting comfortable with the issue stock on an SKS. I'm better with an aftermarket than with the original wood. Never a problem with other rifles....

If you figure out what the deal is, let me know :uhoh:

I'm left handed in everything but rifles and bows. Writing, pistol, probably sword and knife when I learn them, all left handed. But I can't shoot a rifle lefty to save my life. I don't want to even try a bow.

Cross dominance maybe? (Right handed but left eye is master eye)

Check by having him point a finger extended at arms length at a doorknob etc with BOTH eyes open, then close left eye without moving hand/pointing finger. If the finger he sees with the left eye closed/right eye open is no longer pointed at the doorknob he's cross dominant, shooting lefty is a good thing for him.

The SKS is a hard gun for me to hold good, I have an M59/66A1. I prefer a bit bigger guns. That, and I like to use the sling ring to position my hand, and its a no-go on the SKS.

He's probably left eye dominant. In fact, i would bet money on it. he was probably trying to get way down on teh back of the stock so he could look through his left eye right?

it's weird, I really don't know what the right position is for right handed, left eye dominant. (anyone? bueller?)

Left eye dominant - betcha anything. I have the same thing going on although I can do anything with my left hand including writing.

I always have to shoot lefty with a rifle.

If he is, don't try to train him out of it with any of those goofy methods because it's not worth it. Let him be a lefty when he needs to be. It will influence his gun purchase choices but it's not exactly a crippling defect.

I'm with some of the others. Sounds like he is left eye dominant. Know a friend whi is the same way and did have some problems getting a good sight with his new AR.

Either shoot left handed or have him close his left eye (shooting right handed) when shooting rifle/shotgun.
