Is this typical?

I was at the LGS today (one I don't visit often, but its close to work) starting to price out the Savage Axis LH .30-06 I want. They had a few RH Axis rifles in stock, complete with scope, mounts and rings for $329.99. That's a good price, even though I would eventually replace the scope. No left handed rifles. Of course they can order one, and they have an order going in early next week. Price, $319.99, for the bare rifle. No cheap scope, no mounts, no rings.

I was a little put off by the fact that they are selling a scoped RH rifle for only $10 more than a bare LH rifle. MSRP on both rifles is the same on the Savage website.

Is it typical for a LGS to up sell a LH rifle that they can get just as easily as a RH rifle?

depends.....

How much was the scope worth?
If it is some Chinese $8.99 special, what do you expect?

Now, if it is a Leupold, Vari-X-IV, that's a whole different ball-game!:cuss:

I saw a Chinese .22 rimfire scope that sold for $4.99

Try putting that on an '06 and see how far it flies!

The rh rifle could have been a part of a special purchase by the distributor. While the lh model may have been close to a special order item.

The lgs is probably just pricing it on cost basis alone. Shipping on a single rifle could also be a factor.

The scope, while not a Swarovski or Unertl or Leupold, was a entry level Bushnell that would probate retail on its own for $35-$45. Not to mention the cost of rings and mounts.

I saw the same bare rifle at Gander Mtn advertised for $299, and Gander Mtn is usually a little overpriced on new guns and way overpriced on used, so I was rather surprised to see the price at the LGS $20 over Gander Mtn prices.

I'd have no problem paying the extra $20 if MSRP reflected the extra cost over the RH model.

Thankfully, this place isn't the only Savage dealer in the area. Worst case is I over pay a little for the rifle.

The scope combo package is only available in right-hand.

However, I concur that the dealer is at the mercy of the distributer price they charge him at the time he orders it.

They may have went up since he got the ones he has in stock.
