Israel phasing out the Uzi

The Uzi, while still used by the U.S. Secret Service, is also beloved of gangs in the United States because of its reputation as "a macho weapon," said gun expert Tim Brown of Globalsecurity.org. But he added the Uzi "is not a very good gun -- it's very inefficient, inaccurate. ... It's mostly used in bad Hollywood action movies."

:scrutiny:

It's also one of the best submachine guns ever designed.

The Uzi's quality is a matter of personal taste, like many things in the gun world. The linkage between Uzis and gangs/criminals is based more on the aforementioned Hollywood action movies than reality.

What a moron...

I have fired hard-used Uzi's that would keep their shots on a styrofoam coffee cup at 100 yards in semi-auto fire- and run on and on in full auto long after they were crudded-up beyond belief.

The HK is a good enough SMG, but given a choice I'll take an Uzi every time. I guess it might BE inefficient and inaccurate if you were inept at using it- but that's hardly the gun's fault. Mr. Brown's choice of words telegraph both his agenda and his inexperience.

Even though the first UZI I ever fired broke after the first round I still think it is an excellent weapon that has proven itself time and again.

The one I fired was a range gun with literally hundreds of thousands of rounds through it.

It's a shame there's no e-mail address or contact information for the author. I'm sensing some "slight" bias against firearms in this story.

The author is insane-the M-16 carbine can accurately hit a target over 1000 yards away?

Available here for $500????? Not since 1989.

"...presumably to the delight of drug dealers, gang bangers...." what a tool. Media bias? Yup.:barf:

While there are, no doubt, more sofisticated guns available to fill it's role, I doubt that any of them will be as reliable.
If there is any truth at all to it's reputaion, the Uzi will function after being subjected to dirt and abuse that would stop an AK!
I'm sure there are times and situations where that means more than anything else. IMHO.

yeah just a little media bias.....youd think that every gangbanger and crackdealer in the country had one of those under his coat just waiting to shed innocent blood
BSR

"I can't wait to see what the replacement is."

Presumably, IMI is conducting focus groups made up of gangbangers to determine what features a SMG should have.

... will still be produced and exported, to the presumable delight of drug dealers, gang members...
It's not like a drug dealer or gangbanger can just go and buy a legally exported Uzi. This is just another example of the anti-gun media convincing Joe Blow that anyone can just buy an Uzi, and therefore we need more gun control.

Its short barrel gave it an accurate range of just 50 yards.
Man, do I ever feel stoopid, now! I had no idea that I was exceeding the effective accurate range by 150 yards when I was popping man-sized silhouettes at 200 yards, the first time I shot an UZI! (Crockett County, TX, ca. 1985. I was about 13 or 14 years old.)

gun expert Tim Brown of Globalsecurity.org

I might not be a 'Gun Expert' like Tim Brown, but the one time I did get to shoot an UZI (semiauto) I had no problems picking off pop cans at 50 yards offhand. The UZI I was shooting must have been exceptionally acurate in my non-expert opinion if we are to believe this jacknob.
Another thing I noticed about the UZI is that its big and heavy, if gangbangers actually carried these things around concealed all day or all night, I would think that there would be a high incidence of back problems among criminals.

Here I was just getting to the point where I could accurately squeeze off three-round bursts - and now the dadgum thing is obsolete. Drat!

I didn't see any accuracy problems with the Uzi I trained on, but I didn't view it as an alternative to a rifle anyway ...

The simple Uzi, by comparison, is greatly outdated, Shapir said. "Just a few pieces of metal, one spring, and that's it."

Why am I thinking that someday, somewhere, someone is going to rue those words, and probably at the worst possible moment.

Simple has its advantages ...

... will still be produced and exported, to the presumable delight of drug dealers, gang members...

This single statement encapsulates this authors ignorance, bias and agenda. It amazing how quickly reporters now can compromise their journalistic integrity. Bias and sheeple leash-leading are starting to get so apparent now I'm amazed that even THEY can't (won't) see it yet...:fire:

It was replaced with standard and short versions of the American-made M-16, which can accurately hit a target at 1,000 yards.

What are they shooting at...a barn? Ohh NM, I've only shot AR-15's which, being civilian legal and all, are only a fraction as accurate as the M16 :)

The Author of the original AP wire post

Who is the author of the AP wire piece? The place where I had originally seen this (on a local TV / Radio station's site here in MSP) didn't mention the author either.

the original author, visible at .The Guardian UK , is JASON KEYSER . The Brits are a bit less blasé about snipping bylines from a piece off the wire service.

I'd started another thread on this Israel's Military Phases Out The Uzi Didn't know about the other one until someone pointed me to this one (oops).
