What’s the difference between the standard FAL and the Israeli?

I assume the upper and lower receivers and all internal parts are the same but what from the upper receiver forward?

I know the barrels are different or at east they look heavier. The fore end stock is different. How about the operating rod and bolt, are they standard?

Also, does anyone know of anyone making a chrome lined barrel for the FAL (not chrome molly). The only one out there seems to be DSArms Israeli barrel. Any one know of any others that are not the Israeli configuration?

Thanks, Dan

The Izzy has a forward assist on the charging handle (because of sand). As a result, the carrier is different. The gas piston is somewhat longer. The light barrel has the same barrel as any other LB's. Ditto for the heavy barrel. The handguards are unique in appearance and design but are interchangeable (as long as you keep barrel weights the same). The HB has a unique flash hider that is not compatible with other FAL's, ditto for its bipod. The LB's never had bipods.

The Lower uses a different kind of safety lever and the markings are in Hebrew, but otherwise they are interchangeable.

Could the standard bolt, piston and charging handle be used from any FAL or would all or some of these parts have to be Israeli?

All I really want is the barrel. If the rest of the gun could be as close to a standard FAL as possible that would be great.

Thanks for the quick response.

Well, the barrels also have a different thread pitch than regular FAL's. Getting a heavy barrel means you will require the gas block and might as well get the front sights. You'll also need a different gas piston as well as HB style handguards, though they need not be Israeli. You can use any bolt/carrier/charging handle combo with an Israeli barrel.

Are the Israeli ones metric

Sort of...Ash summed up the significant differences nicely. An Izzy takes metric mags, if that helps any.

Breach (and muzzle on the HB, they are in fact female instead of male). But the breach has the thread issues. Any receiver can be modified to work, but it takes a bit more effort than merely replacing the barrel.
