What FAL would you like?

I've been thinking. I love the FAL rifle, and I love my DSA STG-58A. However, if I were to have a FAL type rifle built up from scratch, I think this would be my ideal configuration (my opinion on this fluxuates, mind you).

It'd be built on a DSA Metric Type II receiver, with a carry handle simply because I like the carry handles. It'd have a DSA alloy lightweight lower, and a Penguin humpback buttstock. It'd have an Ergo G3-style grip (which is way more comfortable for me than a regular FAL grip).

I'm torn between a metric folding charging handle and an Israeli style forward-assist handle. It'd have an extended magazine release lever, as well as a wider bolt release lever.

The rear sight would be DSA's windage adjustable para-style. Now, I hate to lose the rear elevation adjustment, but I don't do much shooting beyond 200 yards, and I think that one aperature will allow longer range than the other.

The barrel is something I'm torn on. I'd probably end up going with an 18", chrome lined barrel in the same weight as DSA's "medium contour". The stiffer barrel would make for better accuracy, and the chrome lining would mean easy cleaning.

The front sling swivel would be mounted to the handguards, if I went with a heavy barrel. A heavy barrel would disallow use of a the folding bipod, so it'd be nice to allow use of a shooting sling via free-float handguards. I'm not sure how rugged typical free-floated hand guards are, though; if they were flimsy, I'd skip 'em and go with Penguin non-bipod-cut standard handguards.

Finally, the barrel would be mounted with a five-slot flashhider and bayonet lug. The design would accommodate any bayonet designed for the M16 rifle; there are some pretty cool bayonets out there.

In lieu of that, it'd be an L1A1 flashhider. The L1A1 is one of the few FAL variants to have a proper bayonet, and I've actually ordered such a flashhider and bayonet in the hopes of getting it installed on my rifle if/when the AW ban sunsets.

So that's probably what I'd go with. What FAL configuration would you want if you were having one built?

I'd want a Para model, light weight alloy reciever, with an 18" chrome lined barrel, threaded for a flash suppressor/sound suppressor. Matte, even black finish (it looks like most DSA FALS, and FALs in general have a grayish parkerized color). No carry handle. Picattiny rail w/ stripper clip guide on the top cover. Sling stud on the foregrip.

Most of these features are available on the Paratropper "Congo" model, but $1600 is pretty steep.

This one. DSA 'Congo' worked over by CGW.

I like my DSA Stg58A Carbine just fine. About the only changes I'd make would be to add a scope mount and red dot type scope.

However, my next fal will be a full sized FAL. I'd love to get one with a stainless upper. I'd also like to to find some coffee colored laminated stocks to go with it.

Hopefully all will go well with the AWB. Since my DSA is domestically produced it should be ok to stick a folding para type stock on her when the time comes.

I have a DSA STG58A also and as I think through all my battle rifles I own, this one consistently is my favorite. It is without a doubt the one I'd pick up if the poo impacted the whirling blades.

That said, there are a **few** things I'd like to do in my **next** FAL. It would be built for weight and compactness:

My Ultimate FAL
• DSA Type I receiver
• DSA leightweight aluminum lower
• .243 Win -or- .308 Win (not sure which yet...like the 308 but the 243 is interesting...much less recoil than 308 but much more punch than 5.56)
• 18" bbl -- chromed chamber and bore
• Short gas system
• DSA RIS/RAS - or - Entreprise free float handguard -- sling swivel mounted to the handguard
• Penguin lightweight buttstock -- or -- Para stock
• DSA extended selector switch (I have one of these now and love it)
• DSA extended mag release
• Standard charging handle
• Cleaned up trigger
• NO carry handle or bipod -- no need on this rifle type
• M16A2 windage/elevation adjustable rear sight, dual aperatures, tritium front and rear (why can't someone make one of these that fits in the FAL dovetail????) -- if not that, the VOW Para windage adjustable rear sight with A2 aperatures
• DSA Extreme mount
• DSA M249 SAW pistol grip
• DSA lightweight, short muzzle brake

If I was going to try the FAL again, aluminium lower, no bipod or carry handle (no cuts in the barrel or receiver either), A.R.M.S. dust cover, para rear sight with M-16A2 aperatures, 21" light barrel. Tried lots of short 308 rifles, do not care for any barrel shorter than 20" with that cartridge.
