What marks would I look for that would prove that the Star I'm looking at is former Israeli issue?

I'm aware of two property marks that indicate Israeli military provenance, and I'm sure there are others.

The one I have seen most commonly looks like a lower-case letter 'y' in a circle (his is actually a hebrew character). The second is a six-pointed star containing a symbol, I believe the symbol itself can vary.

They are often only partially stamped, which adds to the fun.

Here's a photo showing both symbols, as well as some others:

I lived in Israel, served in the IDF, worked with the Border Guards, and ran a town armory. I personally never saw or heard of a Spanish Star in Israeli service. I have seen these advertised as Israeli surplus, but I haven't seen any posted with Israeli/Hebrew markings. I'm sure I didn't see everything there, but until I do some Israeli stamps I will remain skeptical. If someone does have one with Israeli markings, please post them, I would like to see if they truly went through Israel.

Is there a reason you need to know the issuing agent or country?
Is the seller asking a premium for this bit of information?

So, I'd be looking for a צ (Tadzei) in a circle, which is an Army Proofmark, like on the K-98s? To answer the questions being asked: They're being advertised as being former Jerusalem Police Issue, not צהייל. The price is $270-$300 vs $240 for a standard Spanish one.

Unless you are a collector bent on adding something unique I would buy the Spanish gun.
Of what I have seen of Jewish surplus, most has been rode hard and put away wet and the condition of most of the stuff doesn't warrant the premium.

First, they are Israeli guns, not "Jewish" guns.
Secondly, the only ratty Israeli surplus guns I've seen were the Mausers that came via Guatemala. Every other gun I've seen out of Israel, rifle or pistol, has had minor to moderate outside wear but was clean and shiny inside, well maintained and not abused.

I notice that too and admit I got a kick out it.
Judaism is a religion, Israel is a country. Not all Jews are Israeli. Not all Israelis are Jews.

I have seen some pretty worn Israeli guns, especially the Kareen/FEG hi powers that came out of Israel had some pretty worn finishes. Of course, any gun that has done duty in the Negev (desert in the south of Israel) is going to be exposed to sand which is very abrasive and plays hell with finishes, so that might explain some of the finish wear.

I only have one Israeli gun. A 1937 Mauser that was rechambered to 7.62 NATO and restamped with the tzadi, and a Magen David- Star of David. The stock is in decent condition, but the metal is quite good.

Semantics really and I find it funny that people seem to get all twitchy if the word Jewish is used in any context.
Jews control the State of Israel regardless of who is living there.

These came out of Israel for sure. However, they may have been issued by security companies instead of official issue. I have seen high powers with the Star of David on them, but few other pistols coming out of Israel.

It's not semantics at all. I'm happy to continue the conversation with you in PM if you want. Let's let the thread stay on topic.

Agreed......it is far from a 'potaytoh/potahtoh' issue, especially to one who is both Jewish and Israeli. Perhaps the discussion should remain on pistols instead of areas where some are less knowledgeable than others. But as a small addition to the group, Magen David actually translates to Shield of David, not Star of....

To the Stars, if they were captured out of Lebanon or privately purchased for a non-governmental agency, they could have been surplussed out of the country without any IDF or police markings. I still haven't seen any with identifiable Israeli markings.
