It has started !! The threat by the Brady Campaign/Million Mom Marchers to reenact the Clinton Gun Ban state by state has started with Florida. The first Gun Ban bill has been filed for the 2005 Florida Legislative Session which begins in March 2005. The bill has not been referred to committees yet. We will notify members when it has been referenced and will provide email addresses to legislators you need to contact to help fight this bill.

SB 500 - Assault Weapons/Detachable Magazine Ban by Gwen Margolis (D-Miami Beach); Would ban the manufacture, importation, possession, purchase, sale, or transfer of any semi-automatic firearm defined as "assault weapons" and any detachable magazine capable of holding more than 10 rounds. It would require forfeiture and confiscation of any such firearm or magazine. Further, it would require the state to destroy any such firearm within 60 days after confiscation or forfeiture. It provides immunity from prosecution if firearm is voluntarily surrendered. Otherwise, it makes a violation of the provisions of this bill a felony of the second degree (15 years in prison and $10,000 fine).

Sincerely,

NRA-Institute for Legislative Action

I also found out this little tidbit of info

"Barbara Graham, speaker at the “Million Mom March†in 2000, was convicted of
shooting and paralyzing for life a man she mistook as one who had killed her
son."

Washington Post, February 2, 2001, “Mother Convicted in Shootingâ€,

That bill has about as much chance of passing in Florida as a bill to require euthanising senior citizens at age 65.

I concur, but sometimes leftist extremists just get lucky; more to the proverbial "point," their parasitic socialist attitudes toward the Second Amendment need to be stomped so flat they'll never so much as think about trying to pass any more of these laws.

We won't have won the battle for our civil rights until it become unthinkable for government even to try to violate them.

They're trying one in Illinois too, but it's the third year in a row. It's Daley's idea; frankly, I think Blagojevich would be just as happy never to mention firearms again until his career ends or times change, but Daley's got indictment problems.

This time he seems to be trying something new; he's basically writing off the downstate Democrats as his opposition (which they are, but still) in public. To get the votes he needs, he's publicly trying to put the Republicans from the Chicago suburbs (which are strong GOP areas, but not pro-gun at all) on the spot and force them to move with him. Whether he can do that or not, I honestly don't know. Much like a virus, Daley learns and adapts each time and gets harder to treat.

states and localities are going to be the downfall for the 2nd amendment

Yes and no. Some states and cities have, indeed, all but completely eviscerated their subjects' Second Amendment civil rights; others, however, have reasserted and strengthened their citizens' rights.

I believe we need a clear, inarguable Supreme Court ruling that redefines the Second Amendment as a guarantee of the individual right to keep and bear arms; other than that, I'd like to see the federal government stay the @#$%^&*! out of the arena. Why? Because on the whole, the federal government is more inaccessible and unresponsive than the states. Some states, to be sure, are complete lost causes, but the majority have done more to protect our civil rights than the federal government.

I just realized the title of this thread shouldn't be "It has started," but "Predation continues."

I agree whole heartedly, Kevin (can you believe that???)

The people who proposed this rubbish have shot themselves in the foot by putting the confiscation part in. I still don't think it would have passed, but with a madatory confiscation in it, it has less chance than snow tomorrow in Miami.

relax...

in a very real sense, i believe these idiots are doing us a favor. they keep gun owners from becoming complacent - and they keep gun ownership in the public dialog. Despite the onslaught of the Michael Moorites, gun ownership is up, W won the election and the pendulum of public opinion is continuing to swing right.

stay brave, stay aware, stay with fox...

I could agree with that, but as one who is stuck behind enemy lines, I hope our Florida bretheren (and sisteren :) ) don't let the low chance of this horse manure passing keep them from screaming bloody murder to their reps.

There's a lot of stuff that passed here in CA that many of us thought would never have a snowball's chance, but you see where we are today.

Anyway, no offense to your post, I would just hate to see others find themselves in the same boat as CA due to complacency.

This FL AWB has been posted like 3 million times. No one outside of Broward or Miami Dade will vote for it. Please remember that politicians do this to play to their core constituencies.

When a right wing rep submits a "Only christians may hold public office" law, he isnt actually trying to get such a law passed, and is actually deeply afraid that he could get blamed if such a law did pass. But he will come across in his home district as being an untoppable crusader for their agenda. Since he doesnt anticipate having to run for office in a jewish neighborhood in brooklyn, it probably wont ever come back to bite him.

The only problem is when politicians who have made a career of specialising to dominate a small, nearly unique political arena are suddenly thrust into the national political scene and have to explain why they:
for liberal NE politicos
-tried to ban all guns
-tried to unfund the military
-tried to raise taxes
-tried to give handouts to minorities/gays/terrorists
-had friends in the communist party/PLO/black panthers/NAMBLA

for conservative rural politicos:
-came down on the wrong side of separation of church and state a few times
-tried to ban abortion
-gave an honest opinion of Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton/Ted Kennedy
-had friends belonging to the KKK/militia/corrupt local sheriff

Actually that about sums up why the republicans are ahead right now. Most are smart enough not to make friends with crazies, and the republicans have less politically risky local eccentricities than Democrats. For Bush, being a texan wasnt seen as a liability as much as Kerry being a NE Liberal.

My vote for best political theory in a nutshell for today (at least).

Repubs who go bad tend to either get labelled hypocrites for moral issue failures or they get involved in shady business deals. Both are kinda self-correcting. People lose credibility, then get "forgiven," or they go to Club Fed for a bit. If it is bad enough they are typically out of politics so don't remain to poison the well for their compatriots.

Dem's get tarred with the "dealing with whacko's" brush which they can't deny publicly too loudly on the national stage or lose the whacko wing support or they get hit with being "tax raiser's and welfare queen supporter's" which, again, denial of would alienate their base. But neither of which gives cause for disavowal by the party, so they (Pelosi and that Georgia nut for two) stay behind like a millstone on the reasonable candidates.

Repub's problem's play better in Blue areas than Dem's do in the Red.

Good thunk beerslurpy. :D

Perhaps the Justice Department's new emphisis on official corruption cases will be the anti-virus we need to politically kill the Daley virus. A strong anti-corruption unit in every US Attorney's office might be a good vaccine....

In some of the blue states, maybe...

However, in the red states, the Brady Bunch is SOL (and I don't mean Sort Of Lucky!,,,,,,)

Yanus

In the Immortal Words of Fritz Zwicky,

Mayor Daley is a SPHERICAL bastard. That is, a bastard any way you look at him. I try to be a Christian-like person, and consider the Samaritan my neighbor, and all, but I just cannot forgive him for what he has done to Meigs Field!

Aargghhh! He's just the same on this case. Spherical, I tell you, spherical!
