I have posted several times regarding the quest for this rifle, a Savage Weather Warrior .308, Lefty, Accustock / Accutrigger. I found it on GB, confirmed stock, bought it, paid in 10 minutes by phone, provided my FFL's contact info at the same time. Two weeks later, I get a call from my
FFL, my Remmy .223 has arrived! Oh joy.

My FFL sent the wrong rifle back, and after another two weeks of back & forth with the seller, I get my money back but no rifle. I also get a retaliatory "F" for giving the seller a bad review, with an extortion email stating he will remove his if I remove mine. What are the odds.

I am now a month in. I wander into Cabelas' last week, order the gun. $599.00 (Just $10.00 more than the GB deal). With tax & special order fee of $20.00, I am out the door for $674.00.

So, six weeks or so is all it took!! I am very happy with Cabelas. I bought the DNZ Deadnutz Gamereaper 1 piece mount from DNZ, and the Leupold 4X14X40AO I swapped from another rifle in the cave. Had scope mounted & boresighted in 20 minutes of walking in the door.

I have it boresighted, which only took around 6" of elevation; windage is dead on, at least according to the stop sign at the end of the street I use to boresight. I am now a Deadnutz fan now for sure.

I hope to have a range report this weekend; wife says this is the last "silent" purchase for a while, with her being "silent" up to now. We'll see:D

Looks like a deer slayer. I love my 308. Those scope mounts are made about an hour from where I live. They are very popular around here.

AKElroy, congrats on the new rifle and excellent choice on the optics. I bought a Savage 16 FCSS Weather Warrior in 7mm-08 last year. I finally managed to shoot it this past weekend after making up a bunch of loads for it. I mounted a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40mm scope with Talley Light Weight rings. I couldn't stand the recoil pad so I ordered a HI VIZ XCoil Redi-Fit pad from Midway and it fits perfectly. It looks and feels a lot nicer since it's not squidgy like the Savage pad. The HI VIZ one is for the Savage 110 synthetic stock (post '99) but it's a drop in fit for the AccuStock. I really enjoyed shooting the Savage this past weekend but the AccuStock is a bit of a disappointment in terms of cheek weld. I would have preferred it if they had put a cheekpiece on the comb like a B&C Medalist style. Overall though I was very impressed with how "tight" the rifle felt. Good luck with yours.

Here's my Savage 16 FCSS with the HI VIZ recoil pad.

1858,

With the occular housing being a trifle large on the Conquests, how does it feel in regards to bolt handle clearance?

Nice! I looked everywhere for an FCSS in .308 and almost bought the nonAccustocked 16 at Gander. Post the range report with pics. Love to see how it shoots.

I am not ditching the stock P.A.D. just yet; It is actually an aftermarket sourced product for Savage. I did a little homework & if the write-ups are accurate, it should help with recoil more than most AM pads. I agree is it very squishy; I do not know how it will hold up. First knick & it's gone. Thanks for the tip.

Good point and it's fine. No problem at all opening and closing the bolt i.e. more than enough clearance. However, if I put the Butler Creek flip-open cap on the ocular bell, the bolt will not clear it due to the large rubber ring around the eyepiece.

:)

You may want to contact the factory..........

Somebody put the handle on the wrong side. :neener:

Very Nice! I would add what the "Seller" on GB said to you to his comments. Copy paste it direct if you can.

GB only allows 200 characters in a response; I had to abreviate every word just to cover the basics. I am over it; the guy will get what he deserves.

If that were the standard recoil pad on Savages, they would be a much nice rifle both esthetically and in how they feel. The same sentiment applies to changing the accutrigger out for an aftermarket replacement.

I absolutely love the Weather Warrior rifles. Had my heart set on a 7mm-08 then they changed the twist of the barrel. Still waiting to see how that shakes out.

I'll have some data this weekend for the Hornady 139gr SST (InterLock) using IMR 4895 powder and CCI 200 primers. Lyman's 49th Edition used a 24" barrel with a 1:9.5 twist to generate their data whereas I have a 22" barrel with a 1:11.5 twist. The 139gr is the second lightest bullet listed by Lyman with bullets ranging from 120gr all the way up to 175gr. The FCSS magazines are LONG (see photo) allowing the bullet to be seated all the way to the lands and still feed from the magazine. The bullets in the loads shown below are seated 0.020" off the lands and the entire case neck is in contact with the bullet. I feel confident that I'll be able to find very accurate loads for 139gr and 154gr Hornady SST bullets although hopefully not at the low end of the scale like Lyman. Here are some velocity numbers from five IMR 4895 and 139gr SST bullet loads with CCI 200 primers and new Remington R-P cases.

Should contact GB about holding your reputation hostage. I'm sure they frown on such things.

I look forward to hearing about the accuracy with the new twist rate. I was looking at the FHSS but the flush fitting magazine on your rifle is very nice indeed.

Elroy,

Pictures of targets man! We NEED pictures of targets.

Preferably with tiny holes very close together :)

Can you share how you chose your COAL? They seem to be "out there" quite a bit.

1858...

I have a Simms pad on my Midway wish list for my 114, but after seeing your HiViz, I'll look into that as well. Is it "gummy" to the touch. I have a Limb Saver on my Marlin and it is so tacky that my shirt seems to stick to it. It's not really about recoil for me, as I found the 7mm-08 pretty mild and the factory pad adequate. But being a somewhat long individual, I'd really like to get the extra 1" LOP.

The HI VIZ pad isn't "gummy" and choosing that brand wasn't about recoil for me either. The 7mm-08 doesn't have that much recoil ... I simply couldn't stand the squidgy feel (or the look) of the Savage PAD or whatever that POS is called. Luckily for me, the AccuStock on the 16 model has the same internal/external dimenesions as the 110 synthetic stock.

I'm still struggling to find a good load for the Savage. All this talk about Savages having amazing out-of-the-box accuracy doesn't help either. So far this Savage is easily the least accurate bolt action rifle I've ever owned. My three 700s all shot better (way better) during intitial load development regardless of the starting load. I'm sure I'll eventually manage to find a good load, but for a rifle to be this sensitive with one of the lightest bullets for the 7mm-08 (this barrel is has a slow twist) doesn't bode well. If I were starting out with a heavy bullet I'd have somewhere to go i.e. lighter, but as it is, I'm at the bottom end of the scale with a slow barrel. :( I'm going to lighten the trigger from the factory 4lb to 3lb, do a better job of aligning the barrel to the stock, check all action screw torque values and reduce the charge to Lyman's "accuracy" load. If that doesn't work, I may have to order a new custom barrel with a faster twist from Krieger or similar .... talk about putting lipstick on a pig! :D I do like the Savage though and can see why so many folks here favor them.

:)

I have purchased 2 savages in the last year. Both are the hunter series, which is a blued barrel/action in the accustock. I'll agree the pad is a bit smushy and cheap looking, but they actually work pretty well. The first rifle is a 243 I got for coyotes that shoots so good I just had to get another in 30-06 to hunt big critters with. Both rifles are very accurate. The 243 registered a .317" 3 shot group with the first load I tried. The 30-06 isn't that good, but it's holding 5/8" groups regularly after a bit of load development. I'm happy with both of them.
