It may be my illusion, but has IDPA outgrown USPSA?

I have been noting a dearth of USPSA competitions relative to IDPA competitions..is it that IDPA has outgrown USPSA or most of the USPSA/IPSC matches have moved overseas or gone belly up? What's your take??..

Don't know about Jamaica, but here in Arkansas, USPSA is alive and well. There is only one place that I even know of that hosts IDPA, but probably 6 or 8 within a few hours drive that hosts USPSA.

We have tried to get IDPA going in Wyoming and with some success. However, the IPSC shooters still out number the IDPA shooters by a huge margin. There are a lot of IPSC guys shooting IDPA, but very few IDPA guys who are solely dedicated to their sport.

In my immediate area there is 1 IPSC club and 2 IDPA clubs. Total number of members, with people who do both is probably similar.

idpa isn't much of anything out here. However we have 4 UPSA affiliated clubs, and soon will have possible 5-6, the few idpa shooters are begining to attend the uspsa matches reguarly.
USPSA also has many more major matches across the country than idpa does.
Don't know why you'd think the majority of USPSA/IPSC matches have "moved overseas or gone belly up"
It's only May and there are 30 major matches listed from now through October in USPSA's Front Sight magazine, and I don't know of a single match that has moved overseas.

Like Zak says, there is a lot more USPSA type matches in Colorado than there is IDPA. Two IDPA clubs as opposed to seven USPSA clubs. The other side of the mountains, Western Colorado, has the same ratio of IDPA to USPSA.

Any new organization like IDPA will have an initial growth spurt than will stabilize. Seems like it started to stabilize a couple years ago.

Another false sense of growth is the mandatory membership in IDPA. I think the biggest indicator of growth is renewals. Where that stands at a national level with IDPA I have no clue. USPSA stays steady. I know about 15,000 USPSA memberships have been added since I joined.

Within two hours of my house, there are:

1 club that does twice-monthly IDPA
1 club that does monthly IPSC and monthly IDPA
2 or 3 clubs that do monthly IPSC only.
2 or 3 clubs that do occasional (<1/month) IPSC or IDPA matches

I was really shocked to find the number of practical shooting clubs in the DC area.

Not to mention the outlaw matches that are held inside of the District's borders.

DFW IDPA & IPSC: 10 to 1

Seems to be much more IDPA down here than IPSC, by a factor of about 10 to 1. I'm sure I'm missing out on some of the local IPSC matches, but I have made an effort to find ALL the cometitive shooting locally.

Up in Arkansas, it seems just the opposite, according to my buddy who shoots at CASA.
