Hey guys,

Ive been wanting to tell someone this for a while, but never got around to it.

A few months ago, my friend and his girlfriend wanted to go shooting. Well, thats not entirely correct. She woke up and the ass crack of dawn, and drug us out of bed to go turn some dollars into noise.

We go out shooting in the mountains (more fun for me than a range)

It was early and i was tired, but i knew that she really wanted to go, and i had never been shooting with her before. So we get out there, my friend brings most of his guns out. I bring my 12 ga mossberg scattergun, my .44 special and my beloved Romanian AK.

We are all having fun, been there for about 2 hours, im loading several mags up for the AK, being that im having more fun than should be legally possible, showing my friends girlfriend the joys of bumpfiring!!. Im loading up the mag, and in the lull of firing, i hear an odd misplaced sound. Ive gotten used to most of the sounds when im out shooting..even with my ears on. I look back, the cars were parked facing the road. my back to the firing area. And to my horror, i look at what used to be the perfectly working 8.5 Dan Wesson .357 revolver that i had giving to her to enjoy!

I can remember the gut feeling that i had as soon as i realized what had happend! i SHOUTED at her to to shooting..my friend was happily enjoying his
AK so he didnt notice what happend. I grabbed the .357 from her. Made sure she was ok, and didnt hurt her hand. Which i was very gratefull for. But my heart just sank.

Less than a week before this happened. My father gave me this Dan Wesson to keep and have. He has had it since it was new. With the little brown case, yellow interior, shoulder holster 2 extra barrels, extra grip and barrel key. Im glad she was ok, but i was very pissed at the same time. I didnt show it, but still. Father-son thing. I was very glad she didnt get hurt, but i didnt know how to break it to my dad what happend.

I had to wait a couple days to tell it to him. He took it alot better than i thought. He was assured that no one got injured, but he told me that he had never, in his lifetime of shooting, ever actually seen that happen to a gun. Especially a robust magnum revolver.

The only thing that i can think of is that, the ammo was crap. Maybe extremely inconsistant, being that it had a squib round. Not enough powder to get it all the way down the barrel, then she fired another on top of it, thus causing the explosion of the barrel. Ive heard all the internet hype around the glock Kb's and all that. Ironically enough, my father also has a Glock 22, that i have personally shot many many rounds through, factory rounds and reloaded rounds together. Actually more handloaded rounds then factory. Not one single problem with it. The brand of ammo was 'Independent' Naturally, i bought it being that it was the cheapest .357 magnum i saw at the local store, and i bought .38 special of the same brand. Never will i buy that ammo again, as the few dollars i saved, cost me a barrel.

My friend, bless his heart, let me shoot as much as i wanted through his S&W 27 Highway Patrolman. He had some stiff rounds, Buffalo Bore, i think. Out of curiosity, he loaded up a few of the rounds that i had, next to some of the powerful buffalo bore, for comparison. Told me to give it a spin. To my very unscientific test, the independent brand was very close to the buffalo bore. So the crappy, off brand ammo maybe was loaded very hot.

This is probably the longest post ive ever typed. Just wanted to let you all know. Any ideas on how i can score another 8.5" tube, without having to trade a kidney for it?? thanks in advance...

Have a smith check the frame to be sure it's not damaged. Wesson barrels are quick change, right? Seems to me I see barrels all the time on ebay.

Hard to know what happened from description but a plugged barrel is certainly likely since it was the barrel that burst and not the cylinder. Commercial reloads are usually OK and are generally down-loaded so I am surprised if you think they were similar to the high performance brand your friend was shooting.

A gun is a thing. Don't cry over something that can't cry over you. get a new barrel or get a new gun. Live and learn.

Nobody got hurt. If you can say that at the end of the day it was a pretty good day.

Hey guys,

As a warning this is a long post, but bear with me...

Atleast no one was hurt. Freak accidents are the ones that really get your attention. You may have lost the barrel but atleast the entire revolver wasn't destroyed in the process;)

Gun Parts Corp might have some parts too. Was it just the liner that was damaged or the shroud a well?

What ammo? Can you post photos?

I never give a gun and reloads to an inexperienced shooter unless I'm watching and not shooting.

I've heard of squibs with factory ammo but never had any first or second hand experience. OTOH I don't know anyone that shoots a significant volume of relaods who's never encountered a squib.

Edit: Sorry I missed part about "Independent" brand ammo. Commercial reloads are still reloads.

I've had problems with commercial reloads myself. I might trust Georgia Arms, but commercial reloads from anybody else is going to get shunned. I'm so picky about it, most of my guns eat new production stuff from the major players.

Stake out the auction sites and I'll bet you find what you want within a few months. Also, Dan Wesson, which just about everybody knows by now, is now part of CZ and they're slowly restarting revolver manufacturing again. Eventually, they may have the parts you need. Maybe find a number and give them a call anyway. They might actually have parts on hand.

Yeah, convient that i can get another barrel for it. I have the 2'' and the 4''...it balances better with the 4'' tube on it.

Although i need to replace the grips, it has the Mr. Beefy man size grips on them. I dont have he man hands, but i like the look and feel of them. Makes me feel like reading 'No Second Place Winner' by Bill Jordan whenever i hold it.

I was suprised with the accuracy with the longer barrel. Maybe im just used to auto's, where as if i actually aim at something that i would normally think i can tag with my AK, im hitting with a .357 wheelgun. Makes me giddy everytime, getting that cheesy sh*t eating grin everytime.

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate every one. After we were looking at it, my friend kept commenting on how he always heard about glocks blowing up on the internet, all the kabooms, but never heard/saw it happen for real. I was like, " yeah man im glad i could be the first. Jackass! " Lesson learned, i think im gonna keep this in my hands only. My dad gave it to me, not to anyone else.

Thanks again for the responses...
