I recently scored a beautiful old 1946 Model 37 in 20 gauge. It looks like it was hardly ever used, wood and blue are like new. It started out as a non-vented Modified 28" barrel. However it now has a PolyChoke installed. I'd like to have a 25" IC barrel (my dream grouse gun), but finding a good used barrel for these older 37s is tough. I suppose I could send it off to PolyChoke to have it shortened and the PolyChoke remounted.

Do I have any other options?

Send it to Mike Orlen and have the Polychoke removed, the barrel shortened to the length you want, and have screw in chokes installed. The value of the gun may increase more than the cost of the work.

I agree with Virginia

I have 3 older Ithacas made about 1960-1970, and really like them. The action is short , fast , and smooth . Send it off and have it shortened properly with choke tubes installed and you will enhance the use and value of the beautiful old gun.

The barrels on the older 37's are not interchangable, but have to be installed and headspaced by a gunsmith. Have a shotgunsmith remove the Poly and drill and tap for chokes. I would not advise this on an original barrel, but since your gun already has a Polychoke you have nothing to lose.

If you had an original barrel numbered to the gun, I'd advise that you contact Ithaca and have them install a new barrel.

Sending it to Mike Orlen might be the way to go. I called the new Ithaca company, and while they were very friendly, they weren't really interested in trying to fit a new barrel to an older frame like mine.

Check with Diamond Gunsmithing in Ithaca NY and he could do the work. I have had him lash up a couple of barrels for me on my 1949 M37 with first rate work.

Oops!

My mistake!

Don't know what I was thinking!
Another senior moment perhaps.

Sorry!
