Ithaca's "Protection" series

The current Ithaca Gun Company, LLC is in problems again from reading other websites. I cannot attest to this claim. My experiences have not been positive with the current company. The worst customer service in the industry. One guy said he ordered a shotgun in April, Ithaca charged his credit card but he still has no shotgun and told it could be up to 8 months. Yes, 8 months. Many stories going on like this I'm sure were not hearing about with this company, plus the positive also.

I own three older Mod 37's (1940's & 50's) which are absolutely wonderful shotguns. The current production ones are either a hit or a miss. I hear more positive than negative feedback. But if you do have a warranty issue heaven forbid you send it back. I won't go into my negative experiences, but I will not deal with them.

If you find one on a shelf, buy it. It could become your favorite and most used shotgun like mine. But don't order one if your in a hurray and want to be updated on the current status. You'll become very disappointed.......

Is there a place to find how old you're Model 37 is by the serial number? Mine is 991XXX, it is a 18.5" Police Special w/4 shot tube.

I agree with you Wags. The Model 37 IMHO is one of the best shotgun actions ever made. In case you don't know, the Model 37 action was almost entirely designed by John M. Browning. I basicly stole the shotgun from the store because they where asking only $200 for it. Mine is a keeper. :)
 
Sam, I am a huge Ithaca Mod 37 fan. I own a 12,16 and 20 gauge that cover all my small game hunting needs. Since they are fixed choked I don't use them for deer or waterfowl. But trust me they are used a lot during the regular hunting season. All 3 have retired my trusty tried and true 870 to deer hunting only.

The original post for this thread spoke of the new Protecton Series. I like what I saw. They should be a winner and money maker for the company if they ever hit the dealer shelves. But I would only purchase one if it was on the shelf, no special ordering for me due to my past dealings with Ithaca Gun Company, LLC.

Your 1967 Police Special Mod 37 sounds like the deal of the century! Some day I'll own one wife approval permitting. The Ithaca Mod 37 is one of America's most under rated and best kept secret in pump shotguns.
 
I noticed it said 5 or 8 shot mag tube, do they tubes hold that, or are they 4+1 and 7+1?

The eight rounder looks tempting...
 
I'd love a new Ithaca to go with my LAPD DSPS, but as was said above, I would only buy one I could hold in my hands first.

Ithaca is apparently going through another restructuring. Hopefully, things will improve for them. It would be sad to see the name and the 37 go away.
 
If thats a 3 inch gun, and I can get an old police style wood stock and corn cob forend on it I will buy one as soon as they become available!!!

I've wanted an ext mag ithaca for a long time, but they are hard to find! :D
 
Zach S Well my Model 37 Police Special is a 4+1 setup. Some places list 4+1 mags as 5 round though it is a little deceiving, but not dishonest. Cause you can get 5 rounds into it even though you need one in the chamber to get that.
 
Calling a 4+1 a 5 shot is pretty traditional. 1911's are commonly listed as 8 shot pistols, 7 in the mag and 1 up the spout. My 870 is a 5 shot gun, 4+1.

My DSPS is a 4+1.
 
According to some posts over at Shotgun World, Ithaca Gun Company, LLC has ceased current production. I had spoken earlier last week with a gunsmith from Ithaca, NY who is retired from Ithaca Gun and he told me the same thing they had moved there existing inventory. The new name will be Ithaca Outdoors rumor is. Where this will take them, what they will produce if anything is yet to be answered. The employees I hear are not receiving much information on the future of the company.

I doubt we'll be seeing the new Protection Series for awhile. If Ithaca has been purchased again, I hope the new organization puts customer service and quality before quantity. I guess we'll know in the next eight months. The Mod 37 is a grand old shotgun........
 
So the Homeland Security model wasn't a mass order for Homeland Security? I was thinking,

"With a huge gov't order how could they be in trouble? At least it explains why other people have to wait so long."

But if it's just a marketing gimic, then I don't know. I see Norinco has some Ithaca 37's floating around, and I heard the ban will expire some time.

Thought so. The fact they called them five and eight shot magazine tubes is what threw me, mossberg lists theirs as six, eight, and nine shot shotguns, but I know the tubes hold one less.

IMO it is dishonest. It would be like Bushmaster saying their rifles come with 31 round magazines. No big deal though, in the future I'll just cringe and move on, like when I hear clip...
 
Norinco's Ithaca 37 copy (the IAC 37) has twin action bars, and I'm told that the Ithaca originals have a single action bar. Other than that, they're pretty close.

I bought one of the IAC 37's for a cheap ($150) truck gun, and it's been reliable. This has the heat shield, Ghost Ring sights, sling swivels, Parkerized finish, and a 19 inch barrel.
 
Luckly you used your credit card when buying. You can go back to the credit card company and complain that you did not get what you ordered. They will credit your card account if you call them!!! Call them on Monday!!!!
I bought the Chinese Norinco's Ithaca riot 37 copy, for $100....I am happy with it, totally relieable, but for $150, I would buy a used 870, or a used Ithaca........
 
Everything I've heard suggests that under the Simpson leadership, Ithaca is strongly on the rebound. Their quality is up, and they've dropped unprofitable lines, sticking to what they make best, the best pump shotgun in the world. If I compare my model '87 (produced in the interim Ithaca Acquisition Corp. years) and the new Ithaca Gun Co.'s model '37 line, I have to say that the latter guns are much better finished, practically back to the level of the original Ithaca Gun Co.
Regarding Ithaca's move, they are moving to a brand new facility, hence the delays in some deliveries and service. I was asked to hold off till July on sending my '87 in for refinishing for that reason (and yep, they will service original Ithacas as well as Ithaca Acquisition products.)
