I'm going to purchase 1 gun out of my bonus. I have a number of good carry weapons, some sporting shotguns and rifles. I've boiled my choices down to:

1. Springfield EMP 1911 in 9mm; why? Fit's my hand, I love 1911's, 9mm is my primary carry caliber, it's 10 rounds and SA vs my current EDC which is a Kahr MK9

2. A Stag Arms AR15; why? I don't have any semi-auto rifles of any kind. I have some good bolt actions in many common calibers but no carbine, etc.

I wish I could get both but only one can come home. I might be leaning towards the EMP because it's just about the most beautiful thing I've ever seen and I can use it/carry it far more than a rifle which means I get to enjoy it more. On the other hand, It seems like a guy needs to have at least one carbine type weapon. I'm retired military so I like the AR format and I have a regular .223 rifle. Some would suggest we get an AR before the administration changes in washington? I don't know. I wouldn't use the AR for HD due to my home layout; I use a handgun. So this gun would be range work and just to have it if everything went crazy. I love the looks of an AR but wouldn't be too much fun only taking it out a handful of times a year to shoot. When I say it that way, the odds of me using/needing the AR are slim to none over the EMP. So I keep going on, back and forth :banghead:

So Just curious for some other thoughts I may not have thought about. I know "what would you do" isn't a great question becasue you're not me but based on this little bit, which of the two would you recommend I pick

Thanks Guys!
God Bless

I say AR, but I'm a rifle guy so I'm biased. :)

Don't be too sure that your AR is "far less likely" to see actual usage/be needed vs a new pistol. Nowadays you just never know.

Easy, get the AR15.

As you stated, you already have several good carry pieces and no semi-auto rifle. Simple.

Gideon,

It's very hard for all us internet armchair quarterbacks to make this decision for you. Even harder with limited information.

Before anyone can really venture to answer, one would need a better understanding of exactly what your situation is. Are you in the middle of the woods, in a city with nearby buildings, or in an apartment? Do you live with others, whom you'll have to worry about hitting through walls? It sounds like you may have other firearms available. Why do you need a new one for home defense - why can't an existing one perform double duty? Where do you live - what country/locality? What are the threats in your area?

I'm sure others will come up with better questions, and better resources.

Get the AR. They may not be around to purchase in a year or two. Stag is a good choice, I have a Stag Model 3.

I'm with run&shoot, plus with the AR you can participate in a wide variety of competitive/semi-competitive shooting. and maybe most importantly, money talks and the more AR/EBR owners in the U.S. the stronger all citizen's rights will be. just because the people the anti's count on for votes frequently lose their spine when confronted with becoming unpopular. just MHO.

Atk; good point; so here's some info:

I live in town; small ranch house, small hall ways; 6 kids!:D
I currently use my EDC (Kahr MK9) or a ruger SP101 3" w/Speer Gold Dot .38's and a Surefire light for nighttime duty. They're by the nightstand as I sleep. It's a VERY low threat area in general; i.e., a very small town in rural Missouri. I have a 1911 .45 ACP full size, a Kahr P9, Keltec P3AT, S&W 642 .38.

On the Rifle side I have bolt actions in .308, 243, .223, .204. I also have two great .22lr rifles, one auto, one bolt and a Walther P22 (don't laugh, mine has been perfect)

For shotguns I have a cheap Winchester semi for duck/turkey, an 870 youth for my boys and that's it. I have thought of getting an 870 pump in 12ga with an extended tube and an 18" barrel just to have it.

So, I really don't NEED either of these two guns. I can cover all of my SD needs right now. For HD I have some good choices including that 870 youth in 20ga!

I probably like the EMP better as I could shoot it, carry it, hold it more but the "gap" in this line up seems to be a semi-auto rifle. I would have considered the Ruger Mini-14 but after shooting them on several different occassions I found them loud and not very accurate.

So may this helps. I picked the Stag Model 2 because I can get it for $799 with a flip up rear sight. At some point in the future I'd likely add an Eotech.

I hear what you guys are saying about the AR. I like the CMMG but in my area the CMMG is $200 more.

Hope this helps!
God Bless

I'm going to say the AR.

1. It fills a gap in your arsenal.
2. EMP is still new; wait for price to go down and kinks to be smoothed out.
3. AR-15 is much more likely to get restricted than the EMP.

Don't forget the 30-round mags, either.

I don't know that you will have to worry about a ban very much, but I still vote for the AR. Mostly because I have more fun with rifles and I am able to do more with them than I am a handgun.

Gideon,

You might consider the question in stages, as well. Exactly what stage of an attack are you considering? If it's inside the house, you need to be concerned with over-penetration, and shooting your family. Is your home built so that every wall is a good backstop, for a rifle? Also, what ahppens if the bullet travels through a window and into a neighbor's house? You might want to consider a shotgun or handgun for fighting inside your home, along side hardening the house, itself.

If the bad guy is outside, you may be okay staying with the shotgun. You've now got the concern of shooting your neighbors, and a rifle is more likely to do that than a shotty.

I just don't see you needing the range of a rifle - and you've already got several rifles, if you do wind up needing that range.

If you go with the 1911, and use it for carry, what will your family do for home defense when you're out? Does your wife have her own personal protection piece? Are any of your children old enough to carry, and do they?

If everyone else is covered, gun-wise, I'd recommend the 1911, or the 870.

If you're really just using this as a reason to get another gun, you might consider which one falls into your budget better, and whether you're satisfied with your current carry piece.

AR15
that's just a huge hole in your collection (no semi-auto's)
it's just a glaring need.

then blow your "rebate" on the other one. :p

Get an AR

while you still can. And buysome 30 round mags while you are at it.

Gideon

I would have to vote for the AR as well. You seem to have many fine CCW/HD choices available; maybe consider trading or selling one of them for the EMP. Then use your "fun" money to get the Stag, some magazines, some surplus ammo, a scope, an EOTech sight, a tactical light, a laser, etc. Think of all the fun you'll have not only shooting the AR, but in buying all those great accessories for it.

WOW tough call they are both really nice guns. But I say get the AR (1ST)

Why do I say 1st, well if your anything like therest of us you have already bought both, you just have not paid forthem yet. So get the AR not while the price is good, get some mags & ammo and you have it your done.

In a few months as you stash away a few more $$$$$ pick up the EMP :)

Good luck, can't go wrong with either.

Wow, I guess the answer is pretty clear!!

I think you're all telling me what I knew but didn't want to consider. I do like rifles and I do love the looks of the AR15. My Kahr MK9 is only 3 or 4 months old and it is a FANTASTIC carry piece. Recoil is almost non-existent, it looks good, is super accurate and is VERY easily concealed.

So I think... it's the AR!

Someone mentioned trading in; I've strugged with this and thought about trading in my P9. It's a great gun but doen'st conceal as well as the MK9; it has a more pronounced muzzle flip so I actually shoot the MK9 better. It's main advantage is that is super super light. Still, I could trade that in on the Stag which would leave me more money for mags and other accessories.

For the AR I'm only planning on a Vicking tactical folding vertical forearm grip and light mount. That'll be all I want, need.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I guess I was just caught up in my lust for that EMP! I know it would shoot like a dream, be accurate and just.... there I go again...

thanks guys
Gideon

go for the AR. who knows how long you have to buy one? much more likely that you'll be able to buy a pistol under the obama regime than an EBR

I'd go with the AR, and since you already have a .223 rifle, you are not adding another caliber to support.

And plenty of mags.

And, are you set up for reloading?
