It's Approaching THAT Time Of Year

They all squirrel, and as big as a house cat

Considering I have seen average size red fox squirrels whoop up on big tom cats around me, I don't think I want to mess with any squirrel that is as big as a cat. As I said before they are evil and out to take over the world.

If you really want a treat head to the SouthWest and hunt up some Grey Tuft Eared (Alberts) squirrel. Two pounds of some of the best tasting table game in North America. View attachment 1029257

Interesting! I wonder how those would fare up here during the winter months. They look kinda neat and if they're that BIG, I'll bet they could do well in fighting off the "fishers" that we have terrorizing the woods in these parts. Those critters can scurry up a tree in no time and snatch squirrels right quick. They even help keep the feral & pet cat population trimmed down some. One thing for sure, you DON'T want to leave little "Foo-Foo" the poodle out in the yard, even if it's fenced in. We have one neighbor down the road a way's who has a cabin that they come up to and stay in, now and then. They left their little Foo-Foo out in the fenced in yard and later that day all they found was a rhinestone collar and a few tufts of curly white hair. :(

And here is more proof that squirrels are evil. They hid 175 pounds worth of walnuts inside the front end of a Chevy Avalanche. The poor owner had to tear down the entire front end to get all the walnuts out.

Squirrel season here in Missouri starts on the third Saturday in May and goes to February 15th of the following year. We have about 9 months to eradicate these menaces. I usually use my 410 or a 22 until late fall or early winter once the leaves fall off. Then I like to switch to my 17m2 for longer shots.

That had to take quite some time to stuff that many walnuts inside the engine compartment. The guy must not drive that truck very often, eh?

We can hunt/shoot/choke to death squirrels, ALL year long on our own property here is Wisconsin. I don't do that unless a squirrel starts messin' with a bird house chewin' on the opening so that it can fit through it and make a nest inside to make more squirrels. You just can't "reason" with those critters, only thing they understand is a small hunk of lead going around 1040 FPS.

The Missouri Dept. of Conservation thinks that we need to give them evil critters time to breed so that is why the season is closed for 3 months. And I agree that they respond best to a dose of lead.

For those consuming squirrel, you do realize they are the same species as rats do you?
My grandpa said they are rats during the great depression. It supposedly tastes the same as squirrel which is pretty good.
I'm not trying rats unless I'm faced with starvation though.

Well considering I got sent on all expenses paid vacations to some god awful places and had to eat the local cuisine, eating a tree rat doesn't bother me. Plus squirrels were a constant staple when growing up. And yes I have no problems eating a lot of stuff. I do draw the line at possums though.

Sure, I do, but then again, so are some PEOPLE, like George Soros.

I came from another country, is Soros a bad guy? He is not a left wing extremist, or, worse, some kind of lgbt, as far as i know. If you mean his nationality, this is so 20th century my friend.

Yes George Soros is a bad guy here in the USA. He has funded such things and teh Black Lives Matters and Antifa movements along with pushing for defunding law enforcement. He is also pushing a far left socialist agenda and financially backs candidates that are far left.

And to stay on subject. There are many different recipes for squirrels. I have cooked them and people didn't even realize they were eating squirrel meat.

I guess if rats are feeding on a quality source I’d food like stored grain they probably aren’t that bad.

It’s the ones eating garbage and cigarette butts giving the rest a bad name.

Take some time to L@@K into his past (George Soros) and then make the decision for yourself what sort of person this man was, and still is, today. I don't believe he'll ever get nominated for "Sainthood".
Mostly sights, I've been wanting to build a nice scoped 22 tho. I like getting them with black powder to.

Yah! Some do say if you sneak up on 'em real quietly and sprinkle that black powder on their tail, they sorta freeze up and you can then thump 'em on the head with a rock or stout stick, and quick stick 'em in a gunny-bag. :)

Only recipe that leaves me cold is from an ash pit we found one day. Cannot confirm, though they have been spotted poaching in the area on cams; Hmongs who had skewered squirrel whole to roast over a makeshift fire. Just what already?!?

Quarter them, dredge them in flour and brown in butter (or bacon fat), add onion mushrooms and white wine, cover and bake 20-30 min. Serve with wild rice pilaf, ice cold beer. That is fine eating!
May i ask - do Americans consume squirrels due to financial reasons or do you gentlemen like the taste of a squirrel? Excuse me for asking, 1.5 years here and trying to understand the cultural aspects.

It’s surely about the taste, no different from rabbit, quail, turkey, or pheasant among small game I enjoy both hunting and eating. While we may enjoy a few jabs about the species and its relative the rat, most US hunters do not hunt for financial reasons but rather despite the abundance of inexpensive commercially available food. Certainly there are exceptions for those in wilderness territories who depend on the land to provide but otherwise we simply enjoy the flavor of wild game.

Now days it is for the taste. Plus one should never waste. For us older members, sometimes it was to help put food on the table. That depended on where you lived too. Growing up in the 70s and 80s we did not have to hunt to eat but what we brought home was appreciated and helped save on the grocery bills.
