Its been a long year...but my rifle is almost finished.

I bought this rifle last November...

A little later I got a Vortex Viper HS 4-16x44 scope...I put it in TPS super low aluminum rings on Warne 2 piece steel bases.

And today the final piece of the puzzle arrived at my door...the McMillan Supergrade.

I'm glad this is done...this is my last rifle, from here on out I'm spending my money on hunting instead of guns...THIS IS GONNA BE SOOOOO MUCH FUN!!!!
 
I hate to tell you this... I really do...

One rifle is never enough... After hunting season that itch will start again....
 
Thanks C-grunt...I've been planning it for about 3 years, it may not everybody's idea of perfect...but it is to me, darn accurate rifle too!

No...this one is it for me...I have plenty of other rifles (28 years worth of buying 2-3 per year)...I don't need or even want anymore. I'm gonna spend the $$$ on hunting...Colorado, Wyoming, Texas just to name a few places I have in mind, I think I can swing a trip at least every other year...I built this rifle for that purpose and I hope its a long and fruitful relationship...I do have a back up rifle though, hope I don't need it but just in case...its a Rem 700 ADL in 270 (its actually my wifes rifle, LOL).

Ever since I was a kid I've dreamed of hunting elk, mule deer, pronghorn, and sheep...I'm not sure my pockets are deep enough for a sheep hunt (I'm gonna try anyway)...but I can do the others. I have a good friend who goes to Colorado every year to elk hunt, he doesn't always get one...but his success rate is pretty good...I'm going with him not next year but the year after.

I'm gonna start small...probably with pronghorn in WY next year or maybe Texas (deer)


I figured a 30-06 was about as good as it gets for a variety of game...and a Model 70, well...I don't believe it gets any better than that.

I won't be home until the 15th (truck driver)...I do have some more pics of the stock though, my wife sent them to me.

Some of them don't show the color good, the close ups do though...and the checkering makes it look sorta faded (forearm and pistol grip)

EDIT: A lot of people told me the McSwirly would weigh more than the plastic factory stock, but it don't...the McSwirly weighs 31.4 oz., the plastic one weighs 32 oz.

That puts the finished weight of the rifle at exactly 9 lbs., thats loaded with 5 rounds, scope, sling and all...ready to hunt weight.

Ahhh. I have family in that business so I can see the problem. LOL.

Those are fantastic stocks and a great rifle. McMillan is actually pretty close to my house. I even ran into Kelly McMillan one day at a hotdog restaurant, right around the time when the whole fiasco with Bank of America was going on. Nice guy. Ive always liked their stocks and rifles and after meeting them and seeing their shop Im even more impressed.
 
Its just a spike...but I'm running low on meat and was anxious to try out my rifle :D

My hunt this morning...
I got in the stand about an hour before daylight and sat there until about 0815 just watching the cows (baby calves are quite amusing) and squirrels...then I saw a deer coming out of the oaks about 450 yards away, put the scope on him and saw it was a spike and first decided to let him walk...but after watching him for about 15-20 minutes the desire to try out my rifle won me over...

By this time he was at 350 yards and would NOT turn broadside at all...so when he turned just a little I held the crosshairs appx. 6 inches over his shoulders and 4 inches into the wind (pretty stiff crosswind coming from about 1 o'clock) and let it rip...when i got the scope back where he should have been, he was nowhere to be seen...but he had been standing in sage grass thats about 3 feet tall. I marked the spot, climbed down, hopped on my trusty steed (Polaris 500) and rode over...there he laid.

I made the shot using Primos shooting sticks placed on my knee (used as a monopod, the legs strapped together), if you've never tried that, I highly recommend it for distance shooting from a stand with no gun rest.

Great looking rifle, man. Glad you're putting it to good use.

ETA: Did you do the bedding and such yourself? And if so, is it difficult?

Yes I did....

Is it hard? No...

But it is tedious work...wouldn't want to do it for a living, but wouldn't trust anybody to do it for me either....I'm picky that way though...its hard to get good work done on anything these days, everybody cutting corners.
