Question About Checking Rifle Accuracy

Have you had any training on how to shoot.

None at all. I guess I should at least start watching some videos or something. I think I'm going to try to put together some homemade sandbags this weekend instead of buying some. Hopefully that will help me some.

I generally use bags, but have mechanical rests and have used a rolled up sleeping bag or gear bag as well. I do not rest the rifle on a hard surface.

Everyone has their own techniques, but there are some common practices that a lot of beginners don't know unless taught. And the methods I use shooting from bags doesn't work in the deer stand, but here are a couple that helped me.
1. Get comfortable and relaxed while on target. If you are having to use your muscles to hold right/left/up/down , even a little bit, then you are most likely going to pull the shot off target.
2. Control your breathing. I like to exhale and then pull the trigger, others just hold their breath. What ever works for you, do it the same every time.
3. Follow through. Just like a golf swing, you need to stay on target during and after the shot. Of course the muzzle is going to move, but you should be looking through the scope at the target and not pulling you head up and having to re-aquire the target in your scope.
These helped me, but there are many better shooters than me here who will probably chime in with other advice. Find our what works for you and make a mental list to do exactly the same for every shot.
